Pulpit, Friday 8/26

Post by Ward Odenwald »

A lot of positives in the predictions (wind direction, speed and little or no upper level cloud cover). Any interest?

Challenging day at Pulpit, but it worked.
Arrived 11:00 am. By then one pilot was already flying.
Launched at 12:51 pm with great wire crew. Thanks for all the help.
Flew XC and got to Greencastle. Topped out 5697 MSL and landed after 2:34 hrs.
Special thanks to Charley for driving me back to Pulpit.
More to come later.

Ward and I met at launch early and I was in the air by 10:40. I stuck to the ridge south of launch venturing out into the valley on a few lift lines. Didn't get as high as Knut or fly as long but I had a great flight. I cut it short and landed in the primary to help launch the others. Unfortunately for them, launching early seemed to be the key. Thanks Ward for getting me in the air early and for the ride back to the top.

Nice day at the Pulpit!

A number of pilots decided to join, but the conditions were gusty to 20/25, so there was a lot of "hang waiting".

Ward finally decided to launch, and John shortly there after. But, the conditions at launch ramped up again.

At about 4:00, I decided to launch, and scrapped and scrambled in minimal ridge lift out to the radio tower. Then, I managed to catch a thermal just outside of the ridge lift line. After a number of turns, turning back to adjust for drift, and turning again, I managed to gain about 2,500' over launch and pull of a little over an hour.

The landing was less than desired. A wing lift just as I was starting to flair, and a broken down tube. Other than that, a wonderful flight!

PS: Thanks John for the pick-up and ride back to the top!

Okay,
Two mistakes:
First: Did not pick the cloud base to the north, during my last "Cloud Base Jump".
This forced me too close to airspace, when I found some weak thermals over Greencastle, which limited me to stick on to it, for that reason.
Second: The element and Garmin did give me two different directions for MASA, which also made it confusing.
Lesson learned, don't screw up turn points/coordinates you enter.
Last, if you don't fly with flight instruments that have airspace, stay north of Route 16. If you are south you will get the most northern tip of the airspace and only ~1-2 miles to linger between, (intersection I-81 & Rt-16), when trying to get to MASA or East.
Also, hopefully we can get more pilots flying together, next time, which makes it so much easier.
For does that are interested, here is a link to the long version at https://youtu.be/VXO0RUV_R6c
