watch out / Unfriendly Owner

Post by wmelo »

Guys,
I run out of air and end up landing in a huge field west of bridge field.
Unfortunately, the owner was not very friendly. I tried to explain to him why I landed in his property, but he replied saying that "we just land wherever we fell like." When Bacil and Rick arrived, I walked to the land owner again and I asked for permission to retrieve my glider with my friends. He was ok and told me to do whatever I have to do.

The bottom up is: Try to not land there! If you do, we learned that there is a back road at the end of the field (see picture) you can use to move out without walking his drive away.

On a more uplifting note, the gentlemen who run this property - say

"you all should feel free to land your hang glider on the property anytime, as long as there aren't crops out"

:)

Walt, we have a google site guide and could add your spot as a restricted field if you think it would be worthwhile. Since likely wouldn't land there since it's 3 bends of the river to the west from laumch, I'm not sure adding it helps to specifically mark it on the map, but we can add if you think it's warranted and you help us identify the exact property (draw a polygon around the field that's off limits because it was hard to tell from your map exactly where the owner's property is).

I think we should spot it a "restricted field." Attached picture shows the field.

Sorry you had an unpleasant time there. I think I landed a PG there a few years ago, with no landowner problems - a lady came out and gave me water.

I guess the guy's right: I would not risk injury or a tree landing to avoid that place. If it's an elective landing and I can choose my LZ, sure, I'll pick a different one. If it's an emergency landing - which ours often are - we don't have that much range if we get flushed - then I'll land in the safest place and take my lumps with the landowner. "Safe" includes "does not require a difficult extraction due to no vehicular access". As you can imagine, with a glider or sailplane, there's no way to get the thing out without driving a truck and trailer close enough to load. The guy doesn't have the right to confiscate your equipment. It may happen that you have to call 911...
