Post by XCanytime »

Looking like a breezy pattern all weekend from the W/NW. Planning on flying both days at Woodstock. Any others? Bacil

It looks like the wind speed with get comfortable for PGs later in the afternoon. Jim, Tom, Peter, and Krista (maybe) will likely be there.

My interest in Sunday has diminished a lot mostly due to cool/cold temps so I most likely will not be going. I had an email from Ricky Fitzpatrick who is interested if anyone needs a driver because he would love to check out the site and meet some local pilots. Give him a call at (973)598-5943.

I'm interested in flying tomorrow later in the afternoon and can leave Thurmont to get to the site before noon.

Thanks,

No worries John. Just fly at the end of the day when it's warmest at 52 degrees and don't get very high. Pretty simple. Bacil

Planning to be there early and try to get airborne by 12:00 - 1:00.
We are a few pilot's that might try to repeat Wards flight on Tuesday. Though might just go south and not extending the flight up north first.
Hopefully it will get warmer than forecast.

It looks like the winds are going to cooperate, even for Falcons, though it's going to be cold.

I have a hunch it's going to be one of those days where the guys who go are going to make those of us who didn't, wish we had.

Nice flying day. I landed by 10033 Old Valley Pike, Mt Jackson, VA 22842 - after the ridge lift started to turn off with a west flow. My vario died at the end of the flight.

Tore my glider down, got a ride from my girlfriend Holly, drove to launch and back, only to discover that my GLIDER IS GONE.

Did someone from the club pick it up? I went and asked the land owners and plant security guard by where I landed, but no one saw anything. I'm really surprised that anyone picked up a 19 foot hang glider.....

Repeat, my Sport 2 155 is missing, working on asking around here locally.

On the other hand, here's the flight log from today. I ended up flying over 81 and landing back in Mt. Jackson after catching a boomer off Short Mtn.

Oh no! Do contact police. It happened once that a pilot had his glider stolen off his car parked at home - they cut the tie downs - but he found it a block away. They must have gotten tired of carrying it, looked inside, shrugged, and walked away.

Other pilots who flew were Bacil, Walt, Knut, Randy, Gary and me. The wind had backed off - and gone cross - by the time I launched around 2:30. "Textured" air. I'll bet there was a glass-off, but no one had cycles left for a relight.

Sorry to hear that John. Personally I never leave my wing packed down along the road, if that is what you did? The only exception is at the bridge field.
Hopefully you'll find it soon. Someone could have picked it up, thinking it was left there for "giveaway". People are not thinking and if this happened, it's just crazy. Hopefully you'll find it soon. Yes, contact Police too.
Flew for 1 1/2 hrs and flew up twice to Edith's Gap, but experienced to much West cross wind. Topped out at 4400.
Thanks to Rick F for helping out with the retrieve and Anthony for coming out too.
Will post my flight tomorrow if anybody interested.

Sorry to hear that John. My day started with a 10A arrival to strong conditions and at least some clouds to mark lift. Briefed Rick on our grandiose plans for the day. By the time I was set up to go the sky had dried up. Launched at 1P just after John in light conditions and had no trouble getting up in front of launch. Headed directly for the Edinburg Gap against a very strong cross from the west. Dolphin flew down to Waonaze Peak and found a strong, very rowdy thermal to 4100' MSL just above the rockpiles. Decided to test the penetration out into the gap and found light lift to maintain between 3500' to 3900' MSL just opposite the corner of Short Mt. Beelined it for the corner and lost down to 2400' MSL just above the corner. Found a strong west cross on the ridge and struggled to stair step my way above the ridge in rowdy air. There is a "hump" just below the high point of 2811' MSL of Short Mt (not far from the corner), and it was generating a lot of turbulence in the west cross. I was getting pounded by the turbulence since I was even with the hump. I decided to turn around and land in a field by the Edinburg Gap Road. As I was flying crosswind to head out to the field I caught a thermal that was strong and turbulent. Gained up to 3800' MSL and drifted with it OTB of Short Mt. Jumped back to the main ridge, flew back to launch, and landed in the bridge field against a strong NW flow on the ground. In the next few hours Knut, Gary, Hugh, and Randy all landed in the bridge field. Got a call from Walt, who landed out one river bend from the Karmy airstrip. Rick and I went to fetch Walt. Congrats to Walt on his first XC flight! The 3 of us celebrated with food and drink at the Strasburg Hotel Bar. Bacil

@Bacil -
Thanks for showing me the way with your ridge run to climb out / over the Edinburg Gap!

I got stuck behind you for a little bit trying to find the right elevator ride to take me over, I was getting terrible L/D, probably doesnt help that I wear a big fluffy down jacket that flaps @ speed.
My attempts from 4.5K to make it over weren't even enough, it took close to 5500ft MSL for me to make the jump. probably could have found a different way of doing it, but was a good learning experience.

It sure is extremely intimidating to be stuck w/ disappearing lift as it switches to the West over Short mountain... I was scratching for a while w/ no exit until I found a thermal that took me high enough to get the hell out of there.

How's the lift over the flats (springtime) W of the ridge?

My plan was to parallel 81 and try to hopskotch thermals down there
