Smithsburg tomorrow

Post by Ward Odenwald »

Pulpit looks soarable for most of the day - good call Bacil (one out of three, 3 days out is pretty good in this game). Going to Smithsburg tomorrow to help Juan Sonen transition back into HG flying. ETA -> 10AM.

I am going to head to Smithsburg tomorrow afternoon after biking to knock the winter's rust off before heading to Daniel's on Sunday.

Morning forecasts are now suggesting a southwesterly flow and the windyty map is predicting a 60 degree cross at Smithsburg for most of the day. Darn!! However, predictions are calling for a near straight in flow at Taylor Farm. Juan and I are going to Taylor, eta 11ish.

If I can't get a tow out of Fairfield today, I might mosey over to Smithburg with the Falcon. I agree about the SW but think there's enough W in it to make it doable (and SB is close to the g-port.) Tell Juan I said hello.

Blaine and Juan both had several flights. For most of the day, the wind direction was predominantly from the WSW @ 10 to 15 mph with higher gusts (most likely thermal triggered) but there were enough “launchable” windows of straight in @ 5 to 10 to make the day. Here are some pics of their flights. The first three show Blaine during one of his flights and the last two are of Juan’s first day in over a decade. Welcome back!!

Good to see that Juan is out and about. Is it just me or in that landing pix of him, he seems suspended very low?

Yes! New glider + new harness = adjustments. Juan finished the day with a smile and a growing “to do” list.

BTW: pics and/or videos of how we fly reinforce what we do right and unarguably highlight necessary improvements. The more we share this info, the safer-stronger we become.
