Green Swamp Sport Klassic

Post by lbunner »

Hi all, the Green Swamp Sport Klassic is again being held at Quest Air. It will be held from April 3rd - 9th. This is an introductory competition for pilots interested in improving their flying skills. The pilots will be mentored by open class pilots like Davis Straub and Greg Dinauer. Each day the mentors will provide classes on topics of the pilots choice. Last year the topics included, thermaling techniques, instrument set up, maximizing performance and weather to name a few. The pilots are divided into teams and each day they are assigned to a different mentor. The pilots are encouraged to be on the task committee so that they may experience how pilot ability and weather translates into picking a task. This is a low key event that is geared toward having fun and yet promotes learning as much as possible. Last year there were many personal bests set by multiple pilots. Home pilot Greg Sessa participated and absolutely slayed it! All types of gliders (even topless) are welcome to join in the fun. Come down and enjoy the beautiful conditions in Florida! I am open to answering any questions you may have.

Thanks Larry! I had a great time at the Green Swamp Sport Klassic last year, and I just signed up for the 2016 event. It is definitely a fun and very laid-back competition geared more toward learning and personal progression. I especially enjoyed flying with, and learning from, top pilots including Larry, Greg, Davis and Tom. All the mentors were more than willing to help with knowledge sharing and learning on the ground as well as in the air through radio communication. I obtained several personal bests last year, which I am hoping to further improve upon at the GSSK this year in April. I too would recommend the event to any pilots looking to learn, improve, and experience low-stress task flying.

To anyone thinking of going this year, note that the lowest early registration price runs until February 12th.

I'm signed up and planning to go also. I've heard nothing but good reviews about the comp. I'm looking forward to sharpening my flying skills and making some new friends.

Greg, let me know if you want to hook up to share the ride.

It is a great comp and a ton of fun! I had a blast there last year. We had one task that was just over 70 miles, with 5 or 6 of us in goal. Super fun week of flying in FL.

Cheers,
Matt

Bunner,
Thanks for letting us know about the Green Swamp Sport Klassic again at Quest Air. Sounds like a fantastic week and a tremendous opportunity for us Sports class pilots. Would love going there, but it is going to be very difficult getting away, having two small kids. Though, would say I do have a 40% chance going.

Knut, I hope you can work it out. Bring the kids! They'll enjoy it as much as you! The weather has finally turned for the better down here and we are getting daily soaring flights. Yesterday we did 30+ miles to the south with four pilots all landing in the same field to make the retrieve super easy. Fun day

I am thinking about going down just to get some flying in. I DO NOT plan to enter the comp, but I can provide a vehicle and be a driver if one is needed. Please let me know if anyone needs a driver. I have a Toyota 4Runner that can carry 4 gliders and a 4 pilots.

Great offer Tim. Come on down guys the weather is excellent. I have 41 hours for the 5 weeks I've been here. One sustained climb of 1100fpm using the Pete Lehmann no BS technique for measurement and almost 600 miles to date. We're going long today so hope to add some more to my totals.

There are still some slots open at the GSSK. It sure would be cool if a few more of you could come down and fly with us. You won't regret it. Update, we did go long on Monday and three of us made the 110 mile flight in about 4 hours including the region's own John Simon. Awesome day in sweet conditions with great friends.
