High Rock 40th Anniversary : Oct 3rd/4th : Volunteers Needed!

Post by Matthew »

Hello Pilots,

I need a couple of volunteers to help out with the fly-in.

Can anyone bring some firewood?

I need one or two people to bring grills.

Also need a couple of people to help with the grilling.

I'd love to come but sold my glider a couple years ago and haven't flown a HG since. I kept my harness and helmet.

Dan, That's no reason not to come out to party! A bit of camaraderie and support for Emma Jane are two worthwhile reasons for both current and former HG pilots to be in the HR LZ on Saturday night.

That said, I regret Kay and I will be in Chicago that weekend. However, if (heaven forbid) the rain date is activated, I'll be there!

High Rock 40th Anniversary : Oct 3rd/4th : Update

Post by Matthew »

Good News-- Bad News

The good news is that Shawn McDuff has offered to do tandems off the rock for 100 dollars per ride.

Commemorative T-Shirts have also been ordered and will be sold at 20 dollars per shirt. Proceeds going to Emma Jane.

Bad news is that we still have not acquired a nearby field to tow PGs. Little Slugger has offered to bring down his tow rig. However, the one field that we hoped to use is in soy beans... and will be so through the fly-in dates. The other field is in corn.

We're still looking-- keep your fingers crossed.

I still need a couple of volunteers to man the grills-- anyone wanna volunteer their spouse or significant other.

There will be a suggested 25 dollar donation to cover the cost of food, libations and the fundraising aspects.

I'm still trying to figure out how in the world we're going to get this to work on the grill, as opposed to a microwave:

But we pilots are an inventive bunch, I'm sure that ideas will be forthcoming!

Ok, sorry, I just had to get that one out of my system.

Seriously, kudos to Matthew for exploring the tandem and PG options, great idea for the 40th anniversary! If anyone has contacts in the valley near Waynesboro/Smithsburg, please give Matthew a call. It would be great if both wings could be in the air for the event.

We stopped by to visit Emma Jane on the way to the Pulpit on Saturday.

The LZ was a bit rough. Emma Jane has contacted the farmer and he will cut the field before the Fly-In.

We scoped out Mong's field as a possible PG tow site. However, we did not get permission from the landowner as it has been recently re-planted.

If anyone has a propane grill that they can bring, please let me know via a PM.

Keep your fingers crossed for fair winds that weekend.

As far as I remember, there was at least one grill at the pavilion. I can't remember if it was propane or charcoal. I can bring either or both. Does anyone else remember what's there?

I have a grill and a propane tank or two that the club can have. I can't be sure I'll be in town next weekend so I can't promise to bring it. But if there is someone in my area who is willing to pick it up you are welcome to it. I live off hwy 234 about 6 miles towards Manassas from I-95.

We miss you Richard. Now that you are no longer teaching why don't you join us and actually get in some flying?

You could join me on our transition to the dark side. Our wings aren't any more fun to fly but they are a lot easier to transport, set up and break down.

The back-up date for the High Rock 40th (Wow, a decadal-event of EPIC proportions! You *will* be there, right????) on Oct 17-18th is RAIN OR SHINE !

So that means....

Be There, come what may!

Cloudy, rainy, stormy, chilly? Doesn't matter, it's still a go, so count on it! If you ordered a shirt, or maybe a Brazilian Wax, the only way you can collect is by showing up. :D

(OK, realistically, if a rain event like the one that hit South Carolina wandered our way, a further postponement might be considered. But we don't see ANYTHING like that at the moment, so we hope & expect that people will show! If it ain't flyable... So what?)

Our goal is to celebrate High Rock flight during this anniversary, and to support Emma-Jane and the Carbaugh family, without whom that 40 years of flying would never have happened. So come on out, have fun, swap stories, and share your fun times with your fellow pilots!

Also, have set aside Hugh's medium. I've set aside T's for everyone who sent me a PM.

The address for the LZ is--

Coffeepot Lane, Smithsburg, MD

I'll post directions on Wednesday.

Preliminary weather reports look good for the entire weekend.

Please PM me or RSVP if you are coming so that I can get a rough head count.

The event is rain or shine.
