Fly-in Attempt #2: Sep 19-20
Since the weather didn't cooperate last weekend, we'll try again for a social/flying outing this weekend, and so far the weather looks better! I'll be out of town until at least Saturday afternoon, but Matt Ingram has offered to rally the effort for us. So stay tuned for updates from Matt!

Re: Fly-in Attempt #2: Sep 19-20
I'm excited for camping and cookout and fireworks on Saturday! The weather so far has me and Mark excited. Fingers crossed for good flying weather at least one of the days.
Re: Fly-in Attempt #2: Sep 19-20
Hmmm... looks like there will be some really good West winds this weekend as of today's forecast (9/16)--
between midnight Saturday and 6am on Sunday morning.
If we get a little WSW late on Saturday, Pulpit will work.
Sunday will probably be a Bacil day-- crack of dawn.

If the party is still on for Saturday evening, Karen and I are going to try to scope out some alternative fields for towing the PGs for the High Rock Fly-In prior to the festivities at the Pulpit.
If anyone else wants to make more of a pretty day when the winds are the wrong way, maybe someone could try again to woo the landowners at Bill's or Fisher Road-- or do some slot clearing at Bill's.
Matthew
PS Fisher works nicely in South winds.

Good idea Matthew. It's been a while since I've bandito'd Fisher Road. Beware that the landowner has no trespassing signs and a shooting range setup below launch. We met him a year ago and he was clear that he didn't want us on his property. Bills Hill LZ could be worth another shot.
If we do decide to do work on Bills we'll need to call the forest service first. Do the trees at the Pulpit also need to be trimmed?

Re: Fly-in Attempt #2: Sep 19-20
I think from a PG perspective, the Pulpit could use some hand trimming on both sides of launch. Tiny cherry trees and other such fabric-catching vegetation. Loppers would be the tool of choice.

Re: Fly-in Attempt #2: Sep 19-20
Given the current weekend forecasts for our HG/PG compatible flying sights (South on Sat. and near due North on Sun.), we should consider pushing the event to another weekend or separate the social/party celebration from flying. Active pilots follow the conditions and, from my armchair, the forecasts indicate that the “bags” and “pipes” will head in different directions this weekend. Ward
Re: Fly-in Attempt #2: Sep 19-20
Trying to achieve a bi-wingual FlyIn is inherently challenging, and I don't envy the organizers' job. Think about it : How many days have there been this year on which both HG and PG were flying at the same site? One strategy is to push things back until you have such a day.... But OTOH, that can negatively affect participation, because many don't have that much flexibility in their lives/schedules.
Sucks that Sat looks so south : It would be a **long** haul from Daniels or Highland to the Pulpit, for both HGers and PGers.
Sunday is at least somewhat encouraging, since HRock often works on due N days. But that doesn't help out the PGers
Oh and don't forget, we're only two weeks out from the High Rock 40th Anniversary. Lots of things to consider.

Re: Fly-in Attempt #2: Sep 19-20
One other possibility : Although we have no LZ for Fisher Road, if conditions are soarable then it's possible to fly down the ridge and land in a more 'friendly' field.
I know that's been done by some PGers in the past few years.... I doubt it would work for HG on Sat given the current forecasts (too light to be sure of ridge lift), but it could lead to a chance of PG flights on Sat, followed by HG flights on Sun (at HRock). Just a thought!

So, is the fly-in on or off?
Is anyone going?

Re: Fly-in Attempt #2: Sep 19-20
Looks like good BBQ and camping weather. I could be convinced to try a flight at Fisher Road on Saturday. The soaring forecast for Pennsylvania isn't looking as good for either Saturday or Sunday however. Is High Rock on Sunday still an option?
Re: Fly-in Attempt #2: Sep 19-20
Bit unsure about High Rock on Sunday.... Some of the casts are calling G20, others just 10-15. I doubt we'll know for sure until the morning of.
Maybe the thing to do is go fly somewhere on Sat (PG:FRoad, HG:Highland?), then head to the Pulpit for an after-fly party?

Hmmmmm....
If just four or five of us show up, it isn't much of a party.

I don't think that you can use those posting in this thread as a proxy for a head-count.
Jeff picked two weekends. People have known about them. There's been interest on FBook as well as the forums. Last weekend was scrubbed, so this one presumably a "go" (absent pouring rain).... And maybe some sort of flying, for at least some, somewhere. Maybe that's enough, ya know?
If everyone's more into flying than the social side, then that might argue for postponing once again. Tough call for Jeff and Matt

Re: Fly-in Attempt #2: Sep 19-20
I'm leaning toward the Janni approach now. Other than the weekends set aside for the High Rock Fly-In, I think we should just have the Pulpit Fly-In the next good weekend with light to moderate West or NW winds.
I doubt anyone is gonna drive from HIghland to the Pulpit or Daniel's to the Pulpit.

Re: Fly-in Attempt #2: Sep 19-20
So you're giving up on HR being flyable Sunday? NWS is still saying N@10-15 as of 1:30 this afternoon. And we know that north days at HR definitely can work out well....
Re: Fly-in Attempt #2: Sep 19-20
We're a flying club. We only get so many free weekends with good flying weather and we should take advantage wherever that may be. The High Rock Fest is only 2 weeks away so I don't blame people for wanting to get some airtime this weekend and save BBQ/Camping energy for High Rock.
That said, I'm not super air horny. If anyone (Mark/David) is still considering BBQ/Camping at the Pulpit with High Rock on Sunday, then I'll join. I wouldn't mind checking out Fisher Road (no LZ - gotta make sure you get up and away) on Saturday.
Let the wind be your guide. For any P2s watching this thread Daniels is looking pretty good. If I don't go then I'll help find you an Observer. Just message me.

Re: Fly-in Attempt #2: Sep 19-20
I think that any social/celebration/party/tales-around-the-bonfire part of a fly-in has either got to be 100% "on" or "off", ya know?
So if the focus is more on the flying options for tomorrow... Then that sounds kinda like an "off".
Right?
I suppose that the impromptu fly-in idea might still work out, if there's a lightish W day sometime soon. But even then, I'd be shocked if 15 people stayed past sunset.
Ah well.

It's going to be a beautiful day. I can't think of a better way to spend it than hanging out with a bunch of fellow enthusiasts and watching Mark do his magic when the sun goes down. Mark, if you are still up for it I'll bring us a variety pack of really good beers.

Re: Fly-in Attempt #2: Sep 19-20 - A biwingal offer
It's going to be a beautiful day up there today. Mark has gone to a lot of trouble to put on a show for us. Let's take a break from our well trodden weekend flight plans and try something we rarely get to do.
I'll bring a PG and assist any HG pilots who might like to try it at the training hill outside of McConnellsburg.
There is also a substantial south face to the ridge just to the North of launch. If we could get some decent launch cycles and get over there, we might have an opportunity for an epic OTB flight along a Northern route that has yet to be attempted.
I'm willing to give it a go if there are enough others to rekindle Marks interest. It would be a shame to let all those sparklers go to waste. They have been the source of some of our fondest fly in memories.

Re: Fly-in Attempt #2: Sep 19-20
Let's do this!
I'm bringing grass fed burgers, hot dogs, buns and a small charcoal grill. I'm planning to fire up the grill around 7pm. I'll have enough for 8 people.
Mark has the fireworks locked and loaded!
David Bodner is bringing the chainsaw so we can cut some firewood for a bonfire (I'll help).
Dan is in. Matthew/Karen are in.
As for today, I'm thinking of trying to fly my paramotor from the High Rock LZ to the Secondary LZ at the Pulpit. If anyone wants to drive me back or if you have an extra driver that could pickup my car from High Rock on your way to the Pulpit let me know.
