Yesterday at Edith's Gap

Post by Dan T »

Edith's Gap was terrific yesterday. By the time I arrived somewhere around 11:00 AM Tom and George were specked out under the clouds and headed over the back. My turn came 30 minutes later or so and took three attempts scratching just below the ridge to finally hook the ride out of there. Finally my patience and persistence paid off and I hooked one that quickly took me to cloud base nearly 3,500 feet above launch. Alas the big blue hole over Fort Valley thwarted my attempt to cross over Short Mountain and into the land of plentiful potential LZs. Just the same I had a personal best altitude gain to punctuate my first OTB at Edith's Gap. I landed in a big field in the center of the valley and had a fairly long walk before the "hang glider needs ride" sign got me a ride back to the launch area where I immediately noticed that my wife's truck was being put to good use picking up other pilots.

I heard that somebody made it to west of Staunton after taking a left turn at Woodstock. That is the first time I have ever heard of anybody making an XC flight to Staunton! Friggin' awesome. Bacil
