Woodstock for Wed
The forecast looks pretty good for flying there in the afternoon. I am interested, any others?

Well, if Steve K. and John M. are venturing forth, I will just have to join the lively duo at Woodstock.

Some other pilots expected by early afternoon are Walt, Blaine Cover (h2 from Ridgely with my foot launch sign off), and another John.

Re: Woodstock for Wed
The forecast has worsened with no to little wind until late afternoon, so I am not going.

(other John here) -
Anyone still up for a bit later in the afternoon?
I've cleared my work schedule up a bit.

Re: Woodstock for Wed
Launched about 2pm, flew for 2 hours. There was a west cross (took a minor tip collapse on launch when I hit the west cross out of the slot). Started by going to the Edinberg gap, then turned north and flew to Signal Knob. Again the day was mildly turbulent until I turned south and head back from Signal Knob. Around the reservoir the bump factor (I think it was rotor from the ridge in the west cross) increased so turned back north, caught a thermal and went off the end at Signal Knob. Followed a deteriorating cloud street and ended up near Riverton, north of Front Royal. It took me three rides to get back to launch. The first was gotten after I walked a mile along rt 55 and took me to Woodstock, the next two were gotten immediately. The sign works wonders. Max altitude 4182 msl (never made it to cloud base. I tried but I seemed to hit a ceiling).
I had an interesting experience when I was having trouble penetrating south on the ridge, I was south of launch. I turned north deciding to not fight the cross and almost immediately hit a thermal. I think the inflow of air to feed the thermal increased the air speed ( I had not been having difficulty penetrating).
Then it was home to play with my granddaughter! That's my story and I am sticking too it. A well spent vacation day!

Re: Woodstock for Wed
I sure blew it today by not going to Woodstock. Usually after a cold front goes through there is at least some wind blowing the following morning. This morning there was virtually no wind blowing around 8:00 AM according to wind mapper and they (I think AirSports.net/Wunderground) lowered the wind forecast for Woodstock/Winchester so I thought it would be a waste to go. It turns out that there was some wind and reasonable flying today there. I am glad that those who went were rewarded. At least my day was not a total waste in that I went to Taylors and mowed grass for 4.5 hours, so it is in good shape for 2-3 weeks.

Re: Woodstock for Wed
Gorgeous day today! Was late in getting there but had an enjoyable flight. Only came down because I was trying to make dinner w/ a friend.
Extra thanks goes to John (Calahan?) (there are too many of us Johns here) for the ride to launch

Re: Woodstock for Wed
Great day!
I took off +- 30 min after Randy on very mild winds. I had to wait like a bag of potato for a few minutes until straight and a little bit strong winds started blowing in front of me. The lift was not strong, but good enough to keep our heads above the ridge. Fortunately, we could find many thermals in front of the ridge. I was able to get a couple of times 2K above the tower, but the thermals were pushing me behind the ridge. Since I did not want to risk, I was not able to get as high as my fellow pilots (what a good excuse to not being able to catch up with Steve and John, is not it?). I landed safely at the main LZ after flying for more than 2 hours.
It was a pleasure to finally meet in person John Dullahan and Steve Kinsley (sorry if I miss spelled your names). It was inspirational experience to see them flying.
Special thanks for John D. for helping on the wire & body ride, Steve K for his hints.
I am looking forward to flying again with all of you.

Re: Woodstock for Wed
Nice flight video.
I strongly recommend, however, staying within the tree line of the primary LZ and doing an aircraft approach. There can often be lots of turbulence (rotor) coming off the tree line that can bounce you out of or prevent you from getting into the field.
