I replaced my 20 years old hang glider helmet last year with a new technology Kali Avatar 2 Carbon helmet. The same helmet that Dustin is now using, though did not chopped the chin guard off. I got it for $199 on Amazon.
Patented Composite Fusion Plus in-molding technology with dual density foam and crumple zone system
Features full Carbon shell
Dual density EPS foam in specific geometric patterns for optimal impact absorption
Washable, adjustable, anti-microbial fit pads

Re: A Helmet Safety Trend?
Thickness
It looks like my old Icaro 2000 have ~3/4 inch thickness in the front. My new Kali Avatar II have +1 inch foam thickness in the front. Assume both helmets have a consistency in thickness, all over.
Though, it seems like the main key is new technology. See link: http://www.kaliprotectives.com/technology/
Compare Weight
My Icaro 2000 (60 L) is 751 gram with a wind shield attached. The new Kali Avatar (M) is 694 gram without the breakaway visor that I don't need.

Re: A Helmet Safety Trend?
I'm sure the Kali has more foam than my Charley at roughly the same weight. That's great. I'm still on the fence whether the technology deserves the hype, though I have to believe your helmet is better than mine.
