Ridge & Wave Weather Seminar...

Post by Danny Brotto »

The Mid-Atlantic Soaring Association will be hosting a Ridge/Wave/Weather seminar on Saturday morning, 17 January. The session will be at the Fairfield EMS/Fire Hall. This is a very comfortable and modern facility, well suited for 25 - 35 people. It will start by 9:30am and be wrapped up by 11:30am. There are a couple of good lunch places in Fairfield to continue discussions if desired. Directions to the Fire Hall will be sent later.

The tentative agenda is listed below, but this can be adjusted to suit the interest of the group:

WX forcasting for Fairfield wave/ridge flights
Ridge and wave flying basics (safety guidelines and good practices)
Description of the local ridges: Tuscarora, Lewistown, Mahantango, High Rock/Blue Ridge, and Massanutten
Ridge and wave routes out of and back to Fairfield (early starts and late returns)
Common ridge and wave tasks for 1000k type flights from Fairfield
Glider and personal preparation for long wave/ridge flights
Cold weather flying factors

There will be some prepared material presented at the session, but this won't really be a lecture. It's meant to be a cooperative discussion with a chance for many people to ask questions and talk about their experiences with Fairfield-based wave-ridge flying.

I have the okay to include some interested Hang Gliding (PG?) folks for the seminar. The limitation is seat space but we should be able to accommodate 5 to 10 HG pilots. I will get the final count of openings and if there are more people interested than slots available, I'll pull names randomly. While the discussion will likely be geared toward sailplane pilots, I believe that much of the information will be useful to the HG/PG group too. The Fairfield EMS/Fire Hall is in central Fairfield PA which is about 15 minutes from HR. If the flying is good that day, it leaves enough time to wrap things up at the seminar and hit HR or McConnelsburg for an afternoon activity.

If you are interested in this event, please PM me and I'll keep you informed as things progress. As this is a limited seating event, please PM me your interest only if you are pretty sure you can make it.

Thanks,
Danny Brotto

Very cool! Wish I could go, but will be snowboarding that day. Might need to straighten out my priorities!
