Re: Edith's Gap today Monday 10 November
Quoted from my facebook flight report:
My video camera has a magnetic trigger to turn it on when it's in it's watertight enclosure. I think that's a smart maker that thought that one up; one less source to leak. Unfortunately I didn't think about that before I put it in my magnetically secured motorcycle tank bag... doh! There will be no video of a very cool flight I had today unless I can interest you in a video of the inside of my tank bag... might be some cool vroom-vroom noises... no? OK I will attempt to upload the track I took from my GPS to google earth though. I was alone so had to hike back up to launch to get the bike. I used my new "Glider Pilot Needs a Ride Back to Car" sign and it worked on the very first car going my way! Thanks Patrick! On my way back I took a less traveled path up over the blue ridge to reward the motorcycle for safely passing so much boring interstate asphalt out from under it's wheels. It's past "peak" in the Shenandoah National Park but it sure was pretty with the sun slanting in low from behind. Hwy 211 has a really nice twisty windy to it. I flew with the vultures today but didn't follow them into their little trap of sinky air this time. Ha! They are great flyers but my mental facilities are twice what theirs are!

" I was alone so had to . . ."
George, could be wrong, but suggesting that your mental facilities are twice that of the soaring birds that shared the ridge with you may be stretching it, as they’re all really good at tree landings/takeoffs and rarely fly alone. When we fly alone and end up in a tree, brainpower differential guesses become moot. All kidding aside, when a LZ owner and/or their neighbors witness the emergency response required to find a treed pilot (most likely hours after they took off alone), it’s bad PR for the rest of us and risks the future of flying at that site.
Please don’t fly alone.
