Monday (09/22/2014), NW winds, dry, sunny, low humity

Post by wmelo »

Although, it is too early to decide, the forecast looks promising to Monday. NW winds in Woodstock, Pulpit, and HR. Hopefully, it will be good day in one of these places. temp around 65F, dry and sunny :)
Perhaps it will be a good day to take the day off and fly.

Hints? Thoughts? Pilots? Observers?

'Twas a good day at Woodstock. I believe 7 or eight pilots flew. Everyone had nice
flights and landed in the primary LZ except me. I tried to head north toward Winchester but sunk out just short of the I81 interchange by Strasburg. Maybe Winchester next time.

We had a great day at Woodstock yesterday. It was a beautiful day, dry, sunny, and warmer. Half a dozen pilots showed up. Most of them with U2 gliders: Just Joe and I used Falcons.
I was the 3rd pilot to launch after 2:00pm. I was observed by John M and Gary also helped in the launch. According to them I did a very good launch. No one had difficulties to gain altitude: plenty of lift and thermals all over. Since I did not want to go behind the ridge, I also got some very strong sinks and turbulence in front of the ridge. I think I reached 3K feet above the ridge, then dropped to just 500 feet above the ridge. I was able to hang there and go up again, but I was not able to get over 1500 feet above the ridge again. After 1 hour flying, I got tired due to the turbulence and decided to land. Two other pilots had already landed: Gary and Adam. I was afraid to have a very turbulent landing, but surprising it was pretty calm at the main LZ (the bridge filed is closed). I did a silly mistake on the landing and let glider nose to pop up. I was able to correct the mistake quickly and had a very good spot landing on my feet.

It was a pleasure to share the Monday with such a nice group of people. Great thanks again to all the pilots, specially John for the ride to the top of the mountain, Gary and John M for helping me on the launch.

I am looking forward to flying again with such a great group of people.

Yep, great day. I didn't fly as high or as long as I could've. I was just looking for a mellow ride. It was pleasant mostly, punctuated by occasional strong turbulence. 1:22 and 1,929 over launch.
