Hyner Labor Day

Post by brianvh »

Looks like a bit of a mix at Hyner this weekend. Friday will be light and variable (which is good), saturday looks like a Jack's day, sunday and Monday back at Hyner for good conditions. Chances of rain saturday and sunday.

I'll be going up too! Hope to see the fireworks that I missed last time.

Arriving on Thursday. Hyner does it own thing regarding wind direction so even though the forecast is not that good for Fri/Sat/Sun, I am hopeful.

The wind was not very co-operative at Hyner. On Thursday a bunch of pilots flew Pleasant Gap including me. It was my first time there and the LZ is quite a glide out with not much of any bail out areas (some because of corn). Wind was coming in maybe about 10 mph+ and I got a bit above launch fairly quickly and even got to 1000 above for a little while. A few pilots got some good altitude to the North of launch. There was a bit of a sink cycle and when I got down to 200 above I decided to head out with hopes of finding a thermal on the way out but didn't find any and reaching the LZ was relatively easy. After I landed conditions improved and a number of pilots got a few thousand above. My flight was at least 30 minutes and several got between an hour and two. It was supposedly fairly windy at Hyner on Thursday and I don't think anyone flew there. On Friday wind was very cross from the left (South and SSE) but there were some flights when a calm cycles occurred and I did a sled. Saturday was even more cross (over the back) or SSE but a few calm cycle flights were done. Sunday started out rainy and it looked like it might rain most of the day so we headed home. On Saturday there was a ALS ice bucket challenge up by the wall in support of TR and a lot of people (30+) did it!

As usual for these things, monday looked the best. Epic sky, but the brave few who stuck out the sunday rain all did morning sleds and left.

Despite the poor conditions, I had a great weekend at Hyner with my crew. We swam, kayaked, threw the frisbee, shot bows, hung out by the fire, made some new friends and even got a sledder in between the rain. Looking forward to going back when the conditions are good.

Not sure why the picture sizes are cropped and all jacked up, sorry.
