Krys was set up when I got there. Conditions looked pretty good when I got there, but they lightened up as I set up. Cavanaugh showed as did Gary Devan to help wire us off.

We stared at each other for a while to see who would be the wind dummy. Turned out it would be Mark on his new wing. We watched him maintain, gain a bit, lose a bit. Krys and I flipped a coin, and I went next. I gained a little and lost a little. Mark and I traded top of a very short stack a couple of times until we both got flushed. I got 20 minutes and never reached 200 over.

After a short visit with Emma Jane, we hustled back up and wired off Danny and Krystof. They both worked hard to squeeze out what they could.

The photographer from last time again showed up, so there should be some nice photos in a week or so.

I stopped off at the reconstituted Rocky's for a sub for the trip home. The food was looking pretty good. Gary, thanks again for coming. I'll buy you a sub next time.

It never went NE. It was launchable all day long. It would've been a good day for H2s to come out for serial sledders.

It was awesome!!!!!!!

Ok, maybe only relatively speaking, from a guy who's been thwarted on a mountain flight for two frickin' months. But at long last, after missing out on other mid-week opportunities, at least I can say I flew that damn wing at a mountain site and had fun!

Arrived at 2:15. That flag on Rt 15, shortly after the I-70 exit, was *due* NE. Hoped that HRock would be making it's own weather, as it sometimes does on a N day..... And that turned out to be the case. We don't fly there as much as in the past, so probably a good reminder that conditions on the cube can be unexpectedly good.

Winds were light on arrival. Hung out for a while, and eventually saw a 12+ mph cycle. Enough to haul the wing off the vehicle.

And I think that the day as a whole was one of timing : If anyone had been ready to launch at that point, I think it would have been pretty easy to get up.

But as I set up, conditions lightened dramatically. And there was lots of haze, nothing close to true post-frontal conditions. The waiting/wondering game began, with the sound of the crickets loud in our ears. *Not* a good sign.

We watched several nearly-soarable cycles roll through, and some large-ish clouds that shaded things a bit too much. But not long after 4:15, I noticed that the vultures were doing better, and that we had a good sunny window incoming, and some clouds upwind that weren't as solid. So I gave it a go.... And imagine, I was able to get over launch!

Many thanks to Dave and Krystof, and especially to Gary (up there solely to help make the day possible, you rock Gary!).

My flight was short, maybe 50 min or so and a few hundred over. But it was hugely rewarding, what a joy to be in the air. And happy to say that I'm much more dialed-in than that first flight at Woodstock, no moments of panic this time on the new wing.

No-winder in the LZ, and maybe even a bit of a tail? Threw the wing up just before the whack-dip, and managed to keep the nose up. Wasn't ready for those conditions, note to self!

During the time that Dave and I broke down, and then got back up top (more thanks to Krystoff and Gary), I think that there might have been a window of near-magic air. Danny was ready to go when we arrived at launch, and there were some really good cycles. But unfortunately they started to dwindle when he was on the cube, and his flight was an extendo. Krystoff gave it a go not long after, but couldn't quite stick. Winds picked up for a bit maybe 10 minutes after his launch, figures, right?

There was an unexpected high overcast that decidedly put a damper on things. Turns out that overcast was due to smoke from fires in NW Canada! Reported on the evening news and confirmed via web search. Watched the sun set last night with an orange glow; telltale sign of particulates in the atmosphere. As they say, "Blame Canada".

Thanks for the launch guys and thanks for the ride to the top Krys. And remember when flying HR, clear your pillars!

Off to Highland this morning.

I took a few minutes to inspect the road work to the lz. The culvert is in fine shape and the road is in good shape overall but for one developing problem. The downgrade side, left side going into the lz, has formed a berm at the edge. This prevents water from sheeting off across the surface side to side and so it travels down the wheel track. Erosion is starting/has been taking place.

I surmise that the berm was created as vehicle weight, including farm machinery, compacted the crushed rock along the wheel track and at the same time pushed it outward along the unsupported edge. Otherwise it’s impressive how this particular type and shape of fragmented shale packs into a cohesive and durable road bed and surface. I believe that any other type of crushed rock or gravel, under the same circumstances, would already have reformed itself into an lz parking lot again. I think that should be noted if any work would become necessary on into the future such as if this problem worsens.

I spoke with Randy who, along with his up-the-road neighbors, was spending the day repairing the drive from their house on up to the road. He’d been unaware of the problem I describe but is going to attempt to re-grade that berm using his equipment. Someone should be in touch with him - I’m retired from that job - to find out if he’s met with any success. If not, my recommendation is that steps be taken to have someone come in and regrade as necessary. This should be done promptly IMHO. The erosion has yet to cause any structural damage and is currently manageable with this type of minimal effort and or expense, but erosion being what it is that may not be the case for long.

It might be good if people make a mental note to take a look-see at things when traveling to and from the lz.
