This Friday and Saturday mark a return of sorts for me. I'll be performing a very cool solo marimba piece as part of a larger concert here in Shepherdstown.
As some may know, I was a professional, full-time percussionist in a former life. Being a drummer is fun, but sometimes you just want to play some melody and harmony for change! That's where the marimba comes in. I always loved playing one at school, but never had one. Now I do! Took the plunge and bought one 5-6 weeks ago. It was a big choice, because it costs nearly as much as a new glider! I don't regret it though, and have been enjoying it a lot (even though it fills my living room).
Here's my instrument...
The concert starts at 7:30pm both Friday and Saturday nights (Feb.18-19) at the War Memorial Building in downtown Shepherdstown. I think there's an admission cost ($10 maybe?) but it should be worth it. Lots of cool stuff on the program---sort of a variety show, with dance, multimedia, vocal, instrumental.
I'll also be performing in a duet for trombone and gyilli---a type of African xylophone. Make an evening of it! Have a great dinner at The Three Onions across the street, then stroll over to the concert.
