Judy-Judy Memorial Fun Fly is GO!

Post by Matthew »

Looks like the weather is going to cooperate for the Judy McCarty Remembrance and Fun Fly at the Pulpit on Saturday, June 14th. Winds are forecast to be NW at 5-10. It may be a lttle north cross. But it's always north cross at the Pulpit.

Please let me know if you can attend by replying to this message. Bring a dish to share and a beverage of choice. Champagne and fireworks and a bonfire with stories about Judy to follow flying. I'll be bring my small propane grill. If anyone else has a similar grill-- please bring it along. Sodas and water will also be provided.

Karen and I plan to arrive at the Pulpit at about noon.

I plan to come, with Bertrand and Sami in tow. They didn't know Judy, but I think she would be pleased to have a female H2 introduced to the sites at an event in her honor.

Just saw the current forecasts, and it's looking pretty darn north.... Maybe consider an early flying day at High Rock, with a departure for the Pulpit by 4pm?

I suspect Judy would say 'Go where it's good!' *smile*

I will bring a Webber charcoal grill that can stay at the Pulpit. Also hamburgers, potato salad, rolls etc.

Forecast is now more NW than N, so maybe all-day at the Pulpit after all? That would be cool!

Yep. Looks NW from just before noon til near sunset at Hagerstown. That bodes well for the Pulpit. Looking forward to it. Bacil

So here's a small/low-res version of that photo I mentioned a few topics back, of the "FiFi" pilots celebrating in the LZ at the end of the ridge at Fisher Road:

Image

Pictured, left to right, are: Sheila, Christy, Judy McCarty, Karen, and Janet.

If I remember right, Christy's flight the day before (from the Pulpit) was the best individual effort for Team FiFi. Judy's effort the next day, sequentially shepherding three Hang-II pilots down the ridge for their (first??) out-landings, and given the scoring structure of the comp, put the FiFi's over the top for the Fly-In.

What an awesome day that was!

That Fifi pic brings back fond memories. I wish I could join you all but I'm in Calif.

Sheesh, can the forecasts be any *more* inconsistent, one day to the next?

Don't know what to think at this point, but the 20+ surface forecast for the Pulpit isn't exactly encouraging. Maybe High Rock after all, and hope that there will be some lighter cycles? (I'd hazard a guess that few of us are current with AWCL conditions, given the rarity of days at the Rock recently).

Or maybe Woodstock at crack-o-dawn, and then hit the road for the Pulpit by mid-afternoon?

It'll definitely be a gorgeous day, at least there's no uncertainty in that regard! 8)

Forecast is still 10-15 for the Rock. No NOTAMs.

Will post something around 8am Saturday morning if diverting to the rock looks best.

NWS surface hourly now has G21 at High Rock for much of the afternoon. NWS surface text still has no mention of a gust factor.

Starting to lean toward Woodstock, given that the ADDS 3k shows a bit of an increase in northern VA over the course of the day....

Downside: the post-flying road time back to the Pulpit.

Yeah pulpit totally blown out and north. If we are still doing the flyin there bring major weed wacking tools. The picnic tables and fire pit look like old cars in a redneck yard. Working on it with machete but can't get close to rocks in firepit

The girls and I have been planning on going to the Pulpit fly-in. Due to work I'm not sure if/when Mark (the Gardinator) will be there. Please let me know if there will be any non-flying folks hanging out at the Pulpit today if flying is moved to Woodstock. Just trying to determine departure time. Thanks!

ADDS, MRF and NOAA text still calling 10-15 at High Rock. Only the hourly showing stronger. Woodstock will not work for the fly in.

Let's start at High Rock for flying.

I'll call the folks not on the server.
