Great day at Highland yesterday!
Came to Highland at 11:30AM and there were already 5-6 pilots ready. Throughout the day, we must have been 10-15 pilots, including students flying.
Wind direction was perfect, with a NW straight down the airstrip and a wind speed from ~6-12 MPH, with perhaps a more steady wind later in the day, but never to strong wind and not too bumpy.
Already at noon the cumulus started to pop up and we did see thermal activities. My first tow was at 2:09PM and my second at 3:38PM, which I both topped out at 3247 feet with an error margin of 16 feet. I guess that was best number I could do yesterday, though Jim was at one point 1000 feet above me.
My flights lasted from 22-40 minutes. Though, it was no problem to stay up around 2000 – 3000 feet, if you wanted to drift with the wind. However, every time you had to fight your way back up North West, you did lose 500 feet and more in great sink.
Also, did fly for the first time with my new Wills Wing Vertical Stabilizer, bought at Silver wings. It probably did not look too cool; but, it was a dream being towed yesterday, having that “Tail Fin” on my Sport 2.
Further, had my first weal link replaced after totally 24 solo flights, in my life. That was interesting and I still don’t know what happened with that weak link; but, was high enough to get safely back to the airport. Probably did not pitch fast enough?
Highland 17 of May, conclusion:
Well worthy going to Highland; but, do have to get better with the pre-flights procedure, so pilots don’t have to wait that long on me. Sorry!
Some pilots did fly for over an hour. Great!
So, could not ask for a better day to celebrate Norway’s 200 years constitution day and much better that getting drunk, like probably 50% of the Norwegian did yesterday. Thank you Napoleon for losing the war and thank you USA for the constitution.
As always on Highland; had a great after flight conversation with hang glider Square heads like me, which is also what makes Highland such a great place.
