Who flew today?

...in a PG about 1,000 feet above Rt. 29 between Warrenton and Gainesville about 7:30 pm?

Considering that location is probably within the Mode C controlled airspace, I would be surprised if the offending PG pilot would admit to the flight, at least on a public forum.

Isn't there a powered PG pilot who lives around Warrenton???

I was wondering it might've been powered. It was too high for me to see anything but the canopy. And since I was driving I actually had my glasses on.

That's a pretty complicated section of airspace. There are at least 3 airspace considerations possibly going on there; the Mode C veil, the Class B, and the Washington ADIZ.

Depending on where exactly this pilot was flying, he may have been outside the ADIZ and below the Class B. He was definitely in the Mode C veil but a paraglider (or any aircraft w/o an electrical system) is not required to have a transponder in a Mode C veil.

It is actually the latest in drone testing.
The idea is to trick a terrorist into thinking it is a sport paraglider, then wham, a Coke bottle whacks them on the head and takes them out.

Just to address the class B issue: the PPGers (and other ultra-light/light sport folks in USUA club 1 there at Warrenton airpark) fly under the class B (upside down layer cake) and within the mode C line (exempt since they do not have an electrical system). That's their story and they're sticking' to it! - Hugh

Yesterday we saw a PPG heading right towards Front Royal as we were driving through town headed to Jalisco Mexican Restaurant. Blue and red older looking rectangular wing.
