2nd Annual Silent Airshow at N. Mt. Vineyards 4/12/14

Post by XCanytime »

Just visited with Brad and Krista Foster today at North Mountain Vineyards. They would like to hold the 2nd annual Silent Airshow on Saturday 4/12/14. Mark your calendars. Last year's event was awesome, w/ Dan Tuckwiller and I making it XC to land at the winery and Jon Brantley, John Dullahan, Peter Van Oevelen, and others demonstrating static and dynamic displays of hang gliding and paragliding. Mark Cavanuaugh, Andy Balk, and Greg Sessa landed out, with Mark and Andy landing very close to the winery and Greg not too far away as well. If the weather cooperates, lets try to have more (qualified for the XC) pilots land out at the winery this year, and have plenty of static and dynamic displays of both hang gliding and paragliding on the winery grounds. A reminder that this Saturday is the Silent Airshow. The previous post has the agenda of events for the day. I would like to have all represented again at the winery, even if it is not flyable from the Woodstock slot. The weather is supposed to be quite nice. Do pipe up if you plan on attending so I can let the owners know what to expect. Thanks, Bacil

Latest weather fcst has it 74 degrees, mostly sunny, and winds N at 7 MPH for Saturday. Looks great for a total club representation at launch and the winery. Bacil

If the forecast holds I'm going to try to fly there from Edith's Gap. Hopefully I can get a couple of the big guns in our PG community to lead the way.

I know about where it is having visited it last year, but it would still be helpful if someone could post GPS coordinates so we can mark a goal point and straightest route.

Thanks,
Dan

Sorry, but the forecast is not the best for Woodstock, when it comes to wind direction and flying for Saturday. So, I will be going to Highland and will meet John M. there around ~11:00 AM. Why? Have had only two flights this year and want's to get airborne.

It looks like Edith's gap is on for tomorrow. PGs are planning to meet in Manassas at 9:15. Hoping to fly to the winery, but will stop by after flying if we don't make it.

Please pass along my regrets to Brad and Krista... Had hoped to at least swing by, maybe set up for a static display, but a friend needs a hand this weekend so I'll be on the road. Thanks for your efforts with this event Bacil, pretty darn cool to have an aviation-enthusiast vintner so close to Woodstock.

Hope the PGers make goal, go for it guys/gals!!!

Peter and I made it to the winery!!!

Laszlo, Tom, Krista, and Austin also went XC. Tom landed way past Winchester and flew 5 hours! Austin landed near Strasburg! Not sure about the others.

Dan, Killien, Randy, Josh, Karl, Justin, Sally, Fabian, Syrus, and maybe some others too. Two tandems! Some flew, some didn't because I t was really windy on launch and cross from the right so you had to launch in a lull, but it turned out to be a super XC day! Thanks to everyone else for helping drive and retrieve!

I'm the first paraglider to land at the winery! Big thanks to Bacil for establishing the relationship and setting goal. What a perfect way to end an XC flight! I felt like I landed at a chateau in France. Brad the owner is pilot and such a nice guy. Everyone made us feel like rock stars. We had a crew of about 10 pilots on the deck on a perfect evening talking flying. Brad was pouring us many different wines and we all bought several bottles to take home.

The flight from Edith's Gap turned out to be pretty easy just going downwind almost due North, but it took me two tries. I assumed the wind was going to be really light, but it was on when we got there at 11:30 and was stronger than we expected. The first flight I launched around 12:30 and got up to 4200 msl, but I missed the huge thermal near Kennedy Peak as I was going over the back and hit monster -4.5 m/s sink that almost put me on the ground in Fort Valley. I fought for another 30 minutes, but landed after 1:20. Back on launch it had gotten even stronger - 15mph and had everyone grounded, but some nice lulls convinced me to setup. My second flight was at 3:30 and it was definitely booming 3+ m/s for many turns. I hit 5100 msl as I drifted over the back with huge clouds straight downwind. At that point I knew I probably had the winery made. I eventually got to 6400 msl at the Edinburg Gap when everything was going up. All you had to do was float downwind and bobble along making lazy turns along the way. I had the winery on my GPS, but couldn't quite see it from the air until I spotted Bacil's glider! Sweet! I was still a mile high when I tagged the waypoint and could have kept flying, but the winery was a much more sophisticated choice to end the day! I will definitely land there again in the future. Thanks Bacil! It was great seeing John Dullahan too! We were at the winery until about 7:30 and finished the day in Front Royal at Lucky Star Lounge. Another good stop - huge beer selection and great burgers.

Edith's Gap is a great site and well worth the effort and money we're spending on it. It's a super place to fly XC with lots of landing options in Fort Valley, no airspace issues, and easy to follow ridges going North. I can't wait to see some hang gliders pull out some big miles here. Unless someone says otherwise Tom has the current site record with 81km landing past Winchester just over the border into West VA!

It was a spectacular day at North Mountain Vineyards yesterday. Bacil had set up his glider and was explaining the basics of free flight to all and sundry who came within earshot. He even convinced a few rapt listeners to try a tandem at Highland Aerosports. Later in the afternoon, as Bacil joined the rest of us for a wine-tasting (at the very reasonable price of $5 per person), Matt made an unheralded arrival after taking off earlier from Edith’s Gap. This was the first paragliding landing at North Mountain Vineyards. Bacil, who had landed here in 2013 and earlier, joined a few of us who went outside to congratulate Matt. While Matt was packing up, another paraglider appeared overhead. It was Peter, the second paraglider pilot to make it to the vineyard. Peter made a nice landing and gave us the opportunity to take a few photos. Later on the remainder of the bagwing contingent arrived by vehicle and joined the group for an impromptu wine party with Brad, the owner of the vineyard. Sitting outside, sipping wine, and sharing flight stories as the sun went down was a perfect ending to the 2014 silent air show at North Mountain Vineyards. A few photos here (captions at upper right of photos): album

2013: All-hanglider day at goal.

2014: All-paraglider day at goal.

2015: Maybe we'll see both wings at goal!

Then: Throw in some sailplanes and balloons! *smile*

PS: Most awesome flights everyone!

That's awesome - way to go PG'ers!
I planend on coming out if the winds looked OK for Woodstock and decided not to since it didn't, but I'm curious: was it doable that day for HG'ers from Edith's Gap? Or the jury is still out on flying HG's from there?
Felix.

I stopped by the Edith's Gap launch today on the way home from an overnight stay in Strasburg. It was blowing straight in at 8 to 15 MPH and definitely ridge soarable. Easily launchable for a hang glider. Bacil
