Re: Saturday
Looks like a hang gliding only day at Woodstock. Will most likely be going there.

Re: Saturday
Yeah, winds aloft on Saturday look strong for PG. Edith's Gap could work on Sunday.
Re: Saturday
Count me in for Woodstock tomorrow! Hoping conditions will be as good as they were on Monday....

Re: Saturday
I'm still fairly positive about today's WS forecast. ETA about 10:45. Feel free to call to coordinate dropping a vehicle in the LZ.
Monday's G40-yet-great conditions notwithstanding, today's G30 forecast doesn't necessarily mean we'll luck into the same thing.... But definitely worth a look on such a nice day!

Re: Saturday
I'll be there ~11AM.
Is it going to be great flying condition today?
I don't know, but I know I need a mountain trip.
Mark, I will call you.

Re: Saturday
I went out thinking it would be honkin'. It wasn't. Launch was downright mellow except for brief periods of gusts that went, at most, to the mid-teens. Most people flew for as long as they wanted. There were a couple of extendos. Mine was one
It was springtime air. Nothing crazy that I saw, but, then, others experienced it for longer.
We all landed at the bridge field. There was a nice breeze all the way to the ground, so landing was a no-brainer. No crops have been planted yet.
Back at the top we ran into a guy with a couple of friendly huskies who live by the end of the finger south of launch.

Re: Saturday
I was the wind dummy that found a lot of sink and showed when not to launch/where not to go...
Squeaked into the field to the left of the bridge field but had a good launch and landing. Went back up top to help others launch but didn't feel like solo launching - good day though.

Woodstock delivered again!
Great day today with many HG pilots getting terrific flights. As many other pilots, I was not so sure about today. But, again Woodstock surprised us all, with great thermals and much less wind that forecast. Off cause great sink between thermals. However, if you did get a good start cycle, and locket in to a thermal early on, you could fly for hours.
I did not fly with eagles today; but, we had two sailplanes that we did fly with for a longer period. This was fun working together with 3 hang gliders and two sailplanes, circle in thermals.
I had a great 1:40 hrs flight and did fly on the ridge almost to the north end and back. However, having a Sport 2, I used some time getting back up, since it turned more west. For most of my flight, I stayed between 2-5k.
We all did land at the bridge field and the LZ condition was good when I did land.
Alt last, have fun tomorrow at Highland, to bad I can't make it.

Re: Saturday
After watching Rich E get *pounded* by sink (12:30-ish?) above the finger south of launch, there was an awful lot of very polite "May I help you into the slot, sir?" among the pilots up top.
I was a bit impatient, and decided to give it a try at around 1:20 or so, with help from Knut, Gary, and Greg. Thanks guys! Winds in the slot were maybe 7-10mph on average, with occasional gusts to 15+, and occasional lulls down to 5.
Took a mellow cycle after a bit of a gust blew through on the right. Launch felt clean/straight, turned left into the cross, got a bit above, and then headed back toward launch to work the lift that was blowing out of the west.
It sucked down low. Really. Just nasty and gusty and unpredictable. After figuring that out, I started chasing cores pretty aggressively, putting it up on a tip and hoping that I'd connect with something to get me the heck out of the nastiness.....
Eventually that worked, at the finger north of launch. I stayed there for a while, getting to 2k and then 3k over launch, gradually being blown down the ridge. Greg and Knut and Gary eventually joined in, and we had a really fun time just south of the resevoir, mixing it up with the sailplanes and trading top-o-the-stack. Conditions were *strong*: I got spit out and turned 90 degrees off-course multiple times. To core, you had to suck-in that bar, crank and bank, and then hold on! By the end of my flight I was sore as hell!
I topped out at 5005' above launch, so I figure that was about 7k MSL. One slightly-close encounter with an immature bald, and got to watch a pair of fully-mature balds down low, later in the flight.
Landing was interesting : Strong, gusty, one of those "Ok, well, I guess I'm going to land in this crap!" days. I did a right-hand approach into the bridge field, and it worked out ok. Winds were cranking when I came in, so it was one of those elevator-down-on-final appoaches : I literally did not flare, just touched-down on my toes and got the wing into the wind. *Really* glad that there wasn't a lot of turbulence.
All told, I think that eight pilots flew today: Rich, myself, Knut, Greg, Gary, Dave B, Joe S, and Randy. The winds were still cranking on I-66 on the way home.... Love that Woodstock Effect!!!!!
