Highland - Sunday March 16

Post by FlyingFelix »

The guys opened the flight park today - tomorrow it looks good for flying, if a bit cold. Dr. Jacks says around 350 fpm lift, light N winds (around 8mph), mid 40's, could be warmer... I'll give it a shot.
Anyone else want to dust off your flying gear?

I was the only pilot at Highland today. Took the first tow of the year around 11 AM, all great, got an extended sledder (20+ minutes). Landed and got right back on a cart (might as well practice, right?), went back up, left the tow around 2600' - got down to about 2100' and BAM - strong thermal (jolts as strong as 500+ feet up) took me to about 2800" fast where I lost it, probably in the inversion layer, not sure. Flew around for a while, got as low as 900' on top of the airport, then again a nice thermal, average 200-300' up - I share it with a hawk up to about 1800' :P
A super-sweet 45 minute flight, tight and strong thermals, great views - pure joy!
Many local birds up, as well as huge gaggles of Seagulls and some White Geese (or something like that), flying around low in large numbers, breaking formations, quite the spectacle!
You should of been there!

Thanks to Sunny, Adam and Jim! Looking forward to a lot of flying over there this year.
Felix.

To bad I could not make it today.
But, I am planning to go to Highland on Friday 3/21. Though it is early to say, the forecast for Friday is Sunshine, highs in the mid 60s and SW at 8 mph.
I am crossing my fingers and hope the weather will be great. Anyone else want to dust off the wing on Friday? Knut
