Newsletter in living color!

Post by Scott »

I just got my copy of the paper newsletter...in color! I'm surprised nobody mentioned it here! :o I had no idea 'til I spoke with Linda that we were the beneficiaries of a Kinkos flub (since I specified B&W in the print order). Thankfully Kinkos paid for their own mistake.

And wow---sure looks nice in color! :) Should we spend the extra bucks to make it color every time? No, I guess you're right. <mopey face>

Of course, as editor I cringe at the many imperfections...most noticeably some missing letters in the type (e.g. back cover, where "raffle" is missing an "fl"). That's due to some sort of bug in Adobe InDesign's implementation of "Save as PDF" --- it drops out every combination of "fl" (any idea how many times those two letters appear side-by-side in a newsletter devoted to FLight? <grin>) Go figure...

And the image of gliders on page 8 is too low-res (note the jaggies). I should've caught that. :(

Yeah, pretty nice! and I can read it flat on my back in bed - or
hand it to a prospective member. By the way, we receive paper
newsletters with color pictures from the Arizona club. (Lot's of
pictures of hang gliders launching and flying - my favorite!) How
come they can afford it if we can't? What if we just ran it off on
someone's home printer (maybe that's what they're doing)? I know ink
cartridges are expensive, but it might still be affordable. - Hugh

Hmm...doing the "inkjet at home" method might work, but I'm not doing it! <grin> (That would be a l-o-n-g project...like 15 minutes per newsletter! :))

I could always get a price check from Kinkos on doing it in color, just to see...

Scott

PS - That Arizona club might only have half the members we do?

They had 42 past-due members this month... How many copies do we
print? (Not all members take the paper newsletter.) Looks like we
spend $80-100 to print an issue. If we don't already, we should send
them a courtesy copy, too:

Arizona Hang Gliding Association (nice crisp name, no laundry list of
different types of aircraft included)
P.O. Box 39013
Phoenix AZ 85069

If you are suggesting that the club buy such equipment, I woud counter that it would be a terrible waste of resources to buy hardware to print four newsletters and one flyer a year

Well, I tend to agree with you Cragin. On the other hand, if you do the math...

Current newsletter printing cost at Kinkos = $75 x 4 = $300/year. That's only $20 less than the Dell color laser...which would print over 100 newsletters on one drum (25 years' worth!). And that's in color! Kinkos is B&W (except when they goof. :))

Of course, it would still take some time to print all those newsletters...
