Ridgely, Thursday Aug 15

Post by Ward Odenwald »

Right now, the predictors indicate that the thermals will be decent at Highland tomorrow with light northerly winds and clear skies. If the casts hold, I’ll be ready to fly by 1. Ward

John Middleton and I waited until a high cirrus layer moved south of the airfield before Jim Rooney towed us up just after 3 PM. I could tell by the intense ride up that the thermals were going to be good. Trying to stay behind a tug on a day with a good lapse rate is a real test of one’s flying abilities. My highest climb of the day was just shy of 5 K msl in a thermal that I found near the north end of the runway and stayed with it until the Choptank River. Thermal conditions looked great for pushing south but most of the fields to the south were green with crops so I decided to stay near Highland. Here are some photos of the day showing the first (highest) climb and one near the end of my flight (just over 2 hrs) that took Middleton and I over rt 480 between Ridgely and the Choptank. Ward
