Tennessee Tree Toppers Team Challenge

Post by Rich E »

I have just signed up for the TTT Team Challenge this year (Sep 1-7) and was wondering:

1. Has anyone done it before and if so, any key pointers? I am a very new H3, 11.5 hours, working on my thermalling...

2. I see Daniel Lukaszwicz Alexandria, Va has also signed up - Dan are you here - I looked for you on the member list without success - would be good to make contact.

3. I guess a radio is pretty essential, found a few good online resources to help and an exam on Aug 10th - are licenses quick to be issued?

4. Anyone else thinking of entering?

Cheers

Rich,

I'm already counting down the days to the TTT. I'm planning to camp on site. Hotels are few and far between and most of the pilots camped out last year. This is really a great event. Hopefully we get some good weather this year. I attended last year right after I got my H3.

Get your HAM radio license. All of the questions are pre-published and you can download an App or flash cards. The test is either free or very low cost but is usually only held once or twice per month. Have a HAM license makes life a lot easier and will keep you legal while flying.

The site is really nice. It's a steep/wide ramp launch with an LZ within an easy glide. I'm planning on driving up on 8/30 or 31 if you are interested in car pooling.

Give me a call if you would like to discuss: eight 04.six15.11seven nine

Rich,

It's a great meet. The format is structured so that the most experienced pilots are rewarded for bringing the less experienced pilots along. With that in mind make sure you let the organizers know that you are a new H3. You'll be in demand that way. Get on a team that has one of the local big guns on it if you can. And finally make sure to attend the informal classes at the end of the day. There are typically world class pilots there who will be divulging secrets that you may spend years figuring out on your own.

Dan,

Thanks so much for the info, I have been researching HAM licenses and found an exam on 10 Aug.

I just retired from the military and am planning on heading to Lookout Mountain for the last 10 days or so of Aug otherwise It would have been great to car pool. I'll definitely give you a call this evening if that works for you - is there a good time?

Cheers

You'll have a great time at Lookout Mountain. I wish I had the time to join you for a week long tune up. The ham radio license is a good idea.

You should get a ham radio walkie and a push to talk (PTT) system. I got mine PTT from www.glidercom.com. I bought the radio from eBay for less than $100.

I'm going to order a rain/weather bag for my glider and a lightweight XC bag. These would have come in handy last year.

See you in a month.

Hi - I'm about to pull the trigger on registering for Team Challenge. I'm an old creaky Hang 4, so can only hurt a team's score. But maybe I'll get lucky and get a personal best. Anybody else?
