Ridgely, Sunday Aug 11

Post by Ward Odenwald »

Looks like the forecast algorithms have just pulled the plug on everything but an early Saturday "ratty flight" to the LZ at the Puplit. However, Sunday at Highland maybe the ticket*. Ward

Most likely will be giving it a try unless the forecast looks bad Sunday morning.

The forecast doesn't look as good this morning for there, so I am going to hold off going today and may possibly go tomorrow. Good luck to the pilots today.

Well, it wasn’t epic (not by any stretch) but my 25 min in the air was certainly better than most of what my Sunday was headed for if I hadn’t gone. Before I arrived, Trevor had already soloed after his dawn check ride – congratulations! There were other pilots including Walt, Tim and SteveK, plus others that I didn’t recognize. The forecasts were accurate at least according to XC Skies (high circus moving in at mid-day with little or no significant thermal activity). Jim towed me up to 2,500 msl just after 1PM and the ride up was smooth and the glide down was almost as smooth except for a zero to 100 ft/min up thermal that I shared with a young/immature Bald Eagle (bottom of the 7th image) at the north end of the runway just before committing to land. Here are some images of the day. Ward

A lot of haze when I got to the bay, then a lot more clouds to Ridgely. Some brakes in the clouds but the low clouds were at 2200. Got more sun as the day went on but lift was very light. They were doing some tandems and one other solo pilot (Dan) was flying their Sport 2. He had the best flight of the day getting maybe 1/2 hour. I did 2 tows and got only 14 min after release and 18 min after release. Quite warm and humid, winds west on the ground but was getting clearer around 3:00 pm after I was finished.
