Weekend 8/10-11

Post by Matthew »

Hmmm.... I'm smelln' West and NW winds again for this weekend.

Maybe Pulpit, maybe Woodstock, maybe High Rock-- maybe two days of flying????

I hear you Matthew. I'm thinking a similar pattern like last weekend. Sunday looks like the best day. Looks north with the way the precip line looks on Sunday. Bacil

Yup! And only a day or two ahead of the peak for the Perseid meteor shower. Cloud cover looks to be 50-ish percent that day/evening, but that's not *too* bad....

Hoping to get there around 11:15am. Thermals start boiling into launch usually around 1pm.

There's no hurry to get there unless you are Bacil who enjoys an early morning ratty flight to the LZ :)

Admittedly, things could change by tomorrow, but the NWS surface 'cast as of 8:30pm Fri seems pretty encouraging:

PARTLY SUNNY WITH A 20 PERCENT CHANCE OF SHOWERS. HIGHS
IN THE UPPER 70S. WEST WINDS 5 TO 10 MPH.

And the NWS hourly is calling for W@5. If the usual 'add 10' rule of thumb holds, it could be a nice day up at the Pulpit.

But we'll see what we see tomorrow, as always, *smile*.

The Pulpit PG LZ (secondary) is closed until August when the corn is cut. PGs have been landing in Carl's fields on the right, but he's not happy about it and says we can only land there in an emergency. It should not be our primary landing field, even though we've been given permission by his grandson. There are other bailout fields that are difficult to land in. There's also the HG primary LZ that's farther away and requires a very good glide to reach. For these reasons it's probably a good idea to limit our PG activities at the Pulpit until after the corn is cut.

Grrrr! Light rain out at the Pulpit at the moment. The hourly drops the cloud cover to 40% by early afternoon, so maybe that signals better wx pushing in. I may wait until the 10-ish forecast updates to make the call.

Thanks for the reminder about the secondary, Matt.

Hmm, with lighter winds forecasted (I'm seeing 1-5mph West in the afternoon), it might be too risky to launch single surface without it being brain-dead soarable, as making the upwind primary is a stretch. I've had flights at the Pulpit where it looks light but decent and found nothing but sink to the secondary LZ, even on a Sport 2.

At least the rain seems to be moving pretty fast on the radar... Maybe there will be enough of an 'ooomph' behind it to make a drive to the Pulpit worthwhile.

Sitting on the fence, like Cavanaagh, hoping the showers to pass. Winds still look good for end of day WNW 5-10.

Will post again around 10am.

Still raining at Pulpit-- waiting now till noon for go - no go decision. Sunset is not till 8pm-- plenty of time to fly if the rain burns off.

I snagged the 10am radar, satellite, and surface map images, so that I can compare them to conditions at noon.
If it looks like there's some bonafide movement, I'll probably give Pulpit a try. If not, well....

Change of plans. Got an offer to go horseback riding on the C&O Canal. So we are off to Poolseville.

May try Highland tomorrow.

Or maybe just go climbing and kayaking.

Rain has cleared out, and satellite shows clear skies up at McC. Updated hourly calling WNW@5 .

I honestly think that the Pulpit is the place to be, and am hoping to hear from some others willing to give it a try!

On the way to Kirshners today it was cloudy and some spots of light rain but approaching Mercersburg we could see clearing to the west. It was sunny at Kirshners mostly today but the wind was not very cooperative until around 4:00 PM when it finally started doing what it was suppose to earlier in the afternoon. A fair bit of waiting on the wind for usable cycles until 4:00. Still a successful class but very frustrating at first.
