I'm in Rehobeth for a family thing, but add me to the list of Sunday flyers at Highland! Probably just for some fun flying as opposed to joining the task, but ya never know...

I had a nice day at Highland although others flew farther and higher. They called a nice task for the conditions - a 54 k triangle. Base was very low, but I made it half way around, despite never getting much over 2000'. I also flew with a couple of eagles for quite a while, but they were immature and served as poor thermal markers. I ended up sinking out a mile or so from Highland and walked back to get my car.

At least one pilot made goal. When I left, I could also see pilots soaring over the airport.

It was a very nice day and a lot of fun.

Tom is entirely too modest. John Simon is the only pilot who completed the triangle with 57.7 km, but Tom, by flying further than anyone else towards the second turnpoint, came next. In difficult conditions Charlie (and the remainder who tagged the first turn point to fly back upwind towards the second turnpoint), made 18 km, Bruce Kavanagh 17.7 km, JD and Jim M. about 15.1km, and yours truly as usual in last place with 14.5 km.

John,
that was a tricky day. If you look at it, the entire Sport class and 5 very, very good topless pilots went down in the same area. Tom and I got through there by the skin of our teeth. Any one of you could have found just one climb, you'd have been on your way to a bunch more Kilometers. Was a tough spot there obviously with all those pilots down within 3-5 km of each other. Things got a bit easier further along, even if there was a headwind.

Thanks for the beer !!!

Hi John
Thanks for the kind words. I will miss the next HC meet on July 27th. JoAnn and I are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary by leaving tomorrow for Venice; stay there three days, then take a 10 day sailing cruise with stops in Croatia, Montenagro, Greece (sail around the "boot" of Italy), Sicily, Capri, and end up in Rome. We return on August 3rd, so I hope to be there for the following meet on August 24th.
Fly far, tag all turnpoints, and complete the task safely - just as you have been doing!
Best regards,
John D.
