Re: High Rock Sunday 4/14
I want to thank Rich Hays for meeting me up at HR today and being my instructor/observer. It's been about about 31 years since I last flew the Rock. I have been re-orienting myself with lessons at Highland and with Rich since last September. I got my glider, harness, parachute and helmet recently and had some time on the training hills with the new gear.
When I arrived at HR this morning about 9:00, there was a steady 10mph straight in to launch and very little gusting. There was no cross to speak of. The LZ had a little left to right cross, but very minimal. I set some streamers up at launch, set my glider up, pre-flighted, and Rich arrived. He assessed the conditions and said it was a perfect day at HR for first flight (again). We talked about my flight plan, what I should do it I caught any lift or sink on launch, at what point I should head to the LZ, etc.
Once up on the pad with the help of Rich and a few locals, got the glider up on my shoulders, yelled clear and slowly climbed out. It was fairly quick launch with the ideal conditions we had. I eventually climbed out 500 - 800' over launch, caught a few thermals, and was enjoying my return to the mountains. I had a 35 minute flight with many passes back and forth on the ridge and some turns in a few thermals.
What a weekend (and a great wife). I went back to Highland on Saturday after the winter layover for a few flights to set up for my solo. That should happen the next good day we have and hopefully get my tow rating soon after. And then flying High Rock on Sunday morning.
Again, I want to thank Rich for his time instructing/observing over these past months. And to the guys at Highland. This should be a great summer coming up. Hope to see everyone out there at the Pulpit fly-in.
