Super day at Woodstock. Arrived at just before 3pm and Gary was there only minutes later. We found conditions to be pretty light ( 5-10mph with little bit of west cross) and a mostly blue sky with an obvious haze present. Started to set up, and around 330pm someone flipped a switch and the freight trains started rolling through. For about then next hour it was pretty rowdy up at launch with strong, frequent, and sharp cycles plowing through. Had to baby sit the glider a lot to make sure it didn't move unexpectedly. By about 430pm things were more reasonable and Gary helped me into the slot. I had a nice launch in mostly straight 8-10mph. Climbed nicely right away and found some very strong lift out there. Averager (10 second) showed me 700-800fpm a coupe times but there was lots of 300-500fpm. Got up to just shy of 6,000 msl and was stopped by the bown scuzy inversion layer. Spent a good amount of the flight bouncing between 4500msl and just under 6,000msl at the inversion layer. Kinda cool thing was, even though it was a mostly "blue" day , there was still a few small cummies out there and they were about 500ft or so ABOVE the inversion layer......that was pretty neat to see. Very fun flight !!!!
Gary and Randy both had nice soaring flights as well.
Good day!!!!
