HAM License

Post by mingram »

I got permission to repost this from the PG list. Edited for content.

---

Some of you might not know that the use of our 2m radio's we use when flying is regulated by the FCC (US Government).
Transmitting on the approved frequencies is only allowed if you have a ham radio license.
If you get caught(if) you can be fined up to 10,000.00 USD or even more.

By the way the Freq we use currently a lot 146.500 Mhz, we should not use anymore. It's a repeater frequency in some of our flying areas.

The exam to get a license is not difficult and costs only 15 USD.

More information can be found here
http://www.arrl.org/licensing-education-training

You can learn for the test online or read the ARRL Ham Radio License manual.

You will get 35 multiple choice questions out of a fixed pool of +100 questions. You can try to memorize them but the manual is worthwhile reading.

Take your dummy exam here (select Technician);
http://www.eham.net/exams/

This is the current pool of questions for the (Technician) exam

There's an EXAM SESSION coming up (see arrl site)

A few clubs still administer the exam for free!

When I took the exam I took the Tech and General back to back. It's not rocket surgery. I found the No-Nonsense Study Guides developed by KB6NU to be very helpful.

I took the test locally, for free. There's a few places around that do testing, about once a month.
I studied online here: http://www.hamradiolicenseexam.com/
Couldn't recommend it enough...(I am not in any way associated with it, just very pleased)
Felix.
