Woodstock 3/29
Just checking in to see if anyone is thinking about Woodstock tomorrow. My wife, our dog and I are planning to head there in the afternoon (exact time TBD) to check on the road condition and soaring conditions. I may be able to post a road/wind report from my phone once we check things out. ..::Jim

Hopefully I will make it as well. Will have to check in the AM to see if they have opened the road yet. Even if not, it would be a nice day to hike stuff in from the back side.

The road was closed yesterday. I am anticipating that it is still closed. The conditions are going to be awesome today, and well worth the hike up the back. Jim you need to drive through Fort Valley on Fort Valley Road behind the launch and take a turn onto Woodstock Tower Road towards launch and follow that road all the way to the switchback at the backside and park by the closed gate. It's a .6 mile hike up a shallow grade to the top of the mountain. Bacil

Fire Tower Road Gate is still closed today.
Use the backside road or hike up.
Holiday weekend may mean the police will not get to opening the gate despite the sun & warm temps.

Re: Woodstock 3/29
Woodstock offered some fun flying yesterday. Big Thx to David Bodner for launch assistance. Please note that the road to launch was opened shortly after we hiked in from the back side. Lift maxed out at 3000' over the ridge. Winds aloft were 8 mph for the first half of the flight and increased to 15 mph (with associated turbulance) later on. I have an aerial photo looking south down the range but I am not exactly sure how to attach it. Thank you CHGPA for sharing your sites and all of the helpful information!

Yep, yep, and yep.The road was closed yesterday. I am anticipating that it is still closed. The conditions are going to be awesome today, and well worth the hike up the back.
The front gate was closed. There was a car parked on the side and a PG in the air. I drove around back, and that gate was closed, too. Jim Gibson showed up with his wife, and we attempted to hike to the top. He succeeded, I didn't. After ditching my glider and harness I finished the hike up and found really sweet conditions. Jim set up leisurely while we talked about site-specific information.
Thermal-generated winds picked up during set-up, peaking in the mid-teens. But they built gently, never punchy. Jim picked a nice 5-8 mph stfi cycle for his launch. The flying appeared fairly effortless, and he landed when he wanted to.
The road was opened while we were there.
