Daniels Sun 2/10

Post by sailin »

Anybody up for it. Questionable HG soaring forecast for sure....but lets go take our sleds like men  Should be a nice day to be outside.

In the unfortunate event that none of my hang glider pilot brethren, decide to head that way and join me in a sled run or two..........does anyone "in the know", know, if any PG pilots are heading to Daniels tomorrow?

Looks a bit light and cross...if it looks good in the AM I may join you. Daniels site is 3 away from my home, I want it looking pretty good to make that kind of trip.
Hope it'll be good, I miss flying for sure.

At least 4 PG pilots will be there, arriving at noon.

Turned out to be a bit colder and more overcast than I had hoped for, but still a fairly nice Feb day in the mountains. I was set up by 130pm...there were patches of sun and patches of overcast moving through. Winds way high up were clearly out of the west while winds in the valley were light and moving from SE, S, to SW. Wind speeds at launch were 5-7mph with maybe an occasional 8-10mph in there....a little cross right and a little cross left at times. Several PGs launched, some sledded , some extendoed, some had a short time above launch. By about 230pm some of the PGs were back up for a second a shot.....Lazlo had a nice low save, which got me suited up and ready to go. Then things went overcast completely :( Lazlo and another PG pilot were able to hang out above the ridge in light lift while I was facing 4-5mph in the slot....with a bit of left cross to it. I waited and waited but it wasn't getting better and there was no sign of sunshine, so I took the best I could. Did about 4 passes back and forth in front of launch...in super light small lift.........couldn't do anything with it. Headed out and found mostly buoyant air with some other small light thermals that I unsuccessfully tried to get a net gain out of. Landed on the southeast spine on the field across from the main LZ as there was a light SE flow in the valley (also the cows were inconveniently positioned in the main LZ.
Overall a great day to be out and it felt great to get a little bit of airtime..been a while with work, weather and moving houses. Good to see the other pilots out there....Lazlo, nice low save!

Drove a total of 6 hours today (plus the crazy drive up to and back from Launch). Got a short 7:30 minutes flight, a good hike, and the chance to be out in nature and see familiar faces.Glad everyone got it some nice safe flights.
Well worth it.
