John Middleton

Post by Rich E »

Dear all,

Just to let you know that John had a fall in his garage while loading up gliders yesterday. It took a hour for him to crawl from the garage to the house to get to his cell phone to be able to call for help.

It turns out that he has broken his hip and will have surgery either today or tomorrow. I have asked which hospital, and if there is anything that needs doing and am waiting to hear back from him.

Regards,

Rich

Oh, John, I am so sorry!

Ya gotta get well soon - students will be seeking guidance from the eminent Instructor of the Year!
(And all of us past students - that is, life-long students - want to share the air with you and hope your absence is as brief as possible)

Thanks everyone. What happened is I was carrying a glider in my garage to load it on the car for training but my left foot caught on a wire causing me to fall forward and hard onto my right hip on the cement floor. After resting for 10 minutes I started checking things and found I couldn't put weight on my right leg though I could move it around. Eventually I found a board I could use as a crutch and in about an hour was able to move the 15 yards and get up some stairs and into the house and a phone. Cragin & Jesse followed by Marney came over and helped. I went to Kaiser Permente then they transferred me to Suburban Hospital. I broke my right hip and had surgery last night where they put 3 long screws in my hip. Not a whole lot of pain but will have to use crutches or a walker for the next 2 - 3 months. Will try to run classes but no flying for me for a good while!

Good to hear from you, John. As far as hip surgeries go, sounds like it could have been worse! Well wishes for the recovery. I know the weight bearing and range of motion precautions can be difficult to adhere to once the pain lessens... I'm up for helping with HG class (loading gliders, etc) now and then if needed. Always good to get out for some training hill practice.

John, I'm only minutes away from Marney's during the day, so if you need a ride somewhere, or something picked up, please give me a call. Sure glad the surgery went well and I hope you recover quicker than the docs expect!

Get better and back to teaching soon, John! You need to help me get my H2, so I can run off the mountain with my new WW F4 195 you've got on order for me. Both my brother and I are bummed right now. We students need you. :-)
