Great news, thanks!Richard Hays wrote:Ok.....its open.

The site protocol is to cap the number of parked cars at three, parked perpendicular to the road. Later comers unload on site and then park along the dirt road on the back side (i.e. down wind side) of the hill. When the ground is soft, be careful not to leave ruts.
Not everyone using the site will read this or know the protocol. So, please spread the word if you see a gaggle of cars or people spinning their tires...less likely to happen if you park across the hill (i.e. perpendicular to the road).
Best,
Daniel
Re: SMITHSBURG IS OPEN!
Daniel's suggestion on the parking protocol is particularly important. Once the ground starts to thaw after a snow it gets very slick. It can be difficult to avoid spinning the tires and rutting the ground even with the best of intentions. Please make sure that your fellow pilots are aware of this and park in accordance with Daniel's suggestion. It's important to let them know before they arrive if possible. Otherwise it might be too late to avoid tearing the ground up.

Re: SMITHSBURG IS OPEN!
Also, there is no parking across the road where the entrance to those fields are. If parking on Cheese Hollow park parallel to the entrance road partially off of the drive way. Lastly, the site protocol has always been that hg schools have priority parking because of carrying multiple gliders and equipment. Even if you are second or third at the site, if schools show up later please be helpful and move your car. Thanks.

Says the H1.5 van passenger who once watched the H 1.5 van driver dig ruts all the way down to the fence, sliding backwards, as he tried to drive forward and up the hill. (It takes about an hour or so for a tow truck to arrive.)Dan T wrote:... It can be difficult to avoid spinning the tires and rutting the ground even with the best of intentions. ....

Re: SMITHSBURG IS OPEN!
Smithburg; is that Smithburg, WV or Smithburg, MD, please?
and if it is MD, is anybody going there this weekend?
would love to fly but i will not be able to make a 4h trip to WV. 1h to MD is more to my liking. ≈
btw, how would I get there?
Cheers,

Re: SMITHSBURG IS OPEN!
The Smithsburg training hill is near Smithsburg, MD. It's a NW site so I doubt anyone will be flying there this weekend as forecast is for SW winds. If you are a CHPGA club member you can find site info in the site-guide under the members only section. Otherwise, besides this forum, you could contact the local instructors, as someone will most likely be teaching there if it's a suitable weekend and you could get a site intro that way.
