High Rock article in the mag
Good work on the article, John Bishop! Pro-quality/journalistic writing, entertaining sidebar on Emma Jane, and a pitch for pilots to keep the site going by going to the site. HG pilots, please note the effort of a PG pilot for a HG-only site.

What magazine? Is the article available to read online? I'm looking forward to flying there hopefully soon!
Felix.

Re: High Rock article in the mag
Hi, Felix-
The December issue of Hang Gliding and Paragliding. Mine arrived on Saturday or Monday. Unfortunately, USHPA does not post the articles on line.
Hopefully during your first flight at High Rock the air will go magic, then you'll be hooked.
Best,
Daniel

Thanks for your answer, Daniel.
I'll wait for my magazine to show up, for some reason all mail is late here...
Definitely looking forward to flying High Rock!

Thanks to everyone who participated in the article, and of course to everyone who worked to maintain this site!
Re: High Rock article in the mag
I finally got my copy of the magazine today. Great article Bishop and thanks for doing it?
Does anybody know who any of the pilots are on the historic picture at the beginning of the article? I think my first entry into Emma Jane's logbook was probably 15 years ago. At that time the launch was already concrete so the picture predates that by some time.

That would be Fred Permenter launching his 160 Duck (or was it an Attack Duck?). Rae Permenter (it may still have been Homit at the time) on the nose. I think that's Ed Tom (ET... or simply "E") backing up the left wing person. That might be Rick Downs on the left wires. Brad Hays ("Porky") on the rear wires. I was on the right wires.
We used to kid Fred for flying in strong winds with that Tom Petty song... "I won't back down".
Enjoyed reading the article but you don't need to be a CHGPA or MHGA member to fly HR.
And someone really needs to sign Mark Cavanaugh off for his H4

The keel pocket on that glider looks a little small. Didn't the (Attack) Duck have a "sling" keel pocket? I remember Fred saying that he used to fly a Sport 167? I thought we sometimes fly in some strong stuff, but that picture shows we aren't even close . And who's the crazy nut in a FedEx uniform holding his hat out for Dan to snatch ? Bacil

You're right about the Duck... that is a Euro Sport 167. Also Rae was Permenter not Homit in that time frame. (Fred and Rae were the couple that got married on the Rock mentioned in the article.)
And yeah, we lauched in strong winds (called a "twanger" launch) back then cause we didn't know any better

Fred flew from HR to land just behind (SE of) the back ridge from the Pulpit launch. He just coulding safely make it over the ridge.
Kevin Carter flew from HR to McConnelsburg and back in a Combat.

One of my favorite flights was Bob Deffenbaughs flight from HR landing in the corn field next to the Hang gliding shop that Bob ran in Gaitersburg Md.. that was in a Comet back in '79 or '80 ..at the time it was a fantastic flight..Also a memorable flight was watching Skip Messersmith in '76 thermalling up and flying over the back landing near the elementary school over the back.. there was a group of guys flying in the old style swing seats..great stuff..but my personal favorite flight was flying from HR to the Hunt Valley Golf course back in '86 in my new HP landing on the front golf course and feeling pretty proud that I had flown the furthest that day. Then Richard Hays pulled up to announce he had flown a few miles further down wind ..think that was a 50 something miler.. Fun stuff..Great Friends...
