Oregon Ridge on Saturday?

Post by Danny Brotto »

Forecasts are coming together for a nice day at Oregon Ridge on Saturday. NE at 7 going E with rain holding off until past 7. Solid overcast. Sounds just about right. (ENE is the best for OR and we should see some of that in the afternoon.) This forecast has been moving around so we'll see but I wanted to put it out there to consider as you make your WE plans. Sunday looks to be a washout.

Trees are about peak here in Baltimore County and with Sandy looking to dump some rain and wind, this will likely be the final WE for decent color. Come on up and play!

I came by Oregon Ridge to check it out - by 10:30 am all is clear (last cars leaving from lower parking lot) winds straight up the slope.
Wish I would have brought my glider!
Perfect day for training.
Felix.

Stop ay OR at about 2:00 today; pretty darn perfect. Lower on the hill it was smooth from the ENE, constant at about 5 to 8 mph. At the top of the hill it was STFI at about 5 to 10 with just enough occasional velocity shifting to have made it interesting. There were smoother cycles at the top could be had however that were long and constant. My Falcon is at the glider port (along with the rack.) I had hoped to rent a glider (or taken a lesson :) ) from one of the instructors that I thought would surely have been there. Alas, another day.

I contacted Pam on Thursday about flying there on Saturday/Sunday to see if any event would preclude us from flying and she responded that Saturday was out. I would have been teaching there otherwise. So I don't know what event or why she said that since it appears nothing was going on!

I checked into it on Thursday and the event listed was a “Walk of Alzheimer’s” benefit scheduled to start at 8:00am. Looks like it was a short walk as it was reported that things were over by mid/late morning.

I looked up that deserted hill thinking “back in the day” there would have been 2 to 3 schools teaching and a dozen private gliders on the hill on a day like that.

I went by around 11am Mob scene. Beaver Dam road was a parking lot. Lower parking lot still full of cars. Hillside had allot of spectators or participants on it. Main parking lot full. Mass exodus of cars leaving. Could have been a possible do after 12 noon but at the moment was a huge cluster F-k.
