Daniels Road Repair

Post by sailin »

Just checking in to see what people think about investigating the possibilities of some repairs to the road at Daniels. Not sure at this point who all the vested parties would be and the permissions we would need, but I think it is worthy looking into. The road seems to be getting worse and worse and I am sure after this winter/spring it will be in really bad shape.

1) Is there interest in the club to pursue this and is there percieved interest to financially support a resolution?

2) Does anybody know contacts of some, or all, of the parties that we would need to contact/involve to make this work?

thanks,
Jon

Interested, but afraid of the cost. Maybe we could just fix the rough spots by installing drainage and filling with rock. Matthew Graham owns property there and could give us some info.

I'll check with the other property owners and see if anyone wants to chip in for road work.

The vegetation is encroaching on the road from both sides of the road, including sticker bushes and hardwood plants that could scratch your automobile. We could effectively increase the usable portion of the road by simply walking along it with a machete and cutting the vegetation back to the edges of the road. Any volunteers for one of those hang/pg wait afternoons?

A few of us have been wanting to exercise our machetes, but we never quite get there early enough to do it. I'll make more of an effort to rally the troops next time. We did a little cleanup on launch this summer, but we don't have many afternoons at Daniels just waiting around because it's so consistent! The flying conditions seem to always be too good! Ha!

Sounds like there is at least some interest. Matthew if you could get the blessing/support of the other property owners that would be awesome......seems it would certainly be beneficial for everyone. I guest most importantly their blessing to let us improve it and then secondly their financial support.

Like Matt I. stated, I think we at least need to consider filling in the deep ruts and holes with rock and trim the side vegetation. This doesn't seem like it would cost too much and would go along way. I would still love the club to consider doing a more in depth, drainage/more complete fix of the road as we have very few south sites and need to keep it accessible. It is getting to the point where only the highest clearance 4wd vehicles will make it up and my guess is soon they will begin to have issues as well if nothing is done. .

If memory serves me the main issues seems to be:
1) about 3 or 4 large ruts,
2) the top section has lots of large rocks that the vehicles can bottom out on
3) the side vegetation.

If memory serves, the road was improved about 5 years ago by a developer, I think, up until the final left turn. I doubt any real engineering was done, and there didn't seem to be any provisions made for drainage. As a result, it didn't last very long.

We can probably improve things by hand. But, I think to do a better job would cost some serious money, including the installation of some real drainage culverts.
