Your club dues at work ( again ) Hellam Hill

Post by Richard Hays »

MHGA is reimbursing David Kin for his work clearing and bush-hogging the Hellam Hill flying site/training hill. The landowners were very appreciative too. David is a new pilot in our area from the York Pa. / Harrisburg area. After conversing with me; David took the initiative and met with the landowners....got the ok to get it mowed.....got the mower guy lined up....and got it done.

Hellam Hill has a long history of hanggliding being conducted there. Over the years it has not been used much and the landowners don't keep up with the pasture like they use to. Sticker bushes sprung up everywhere and flying there became somewhat less than ideal. About 5 years ago we had the hill cleared. Tom Allan spear headed that effort and had the hill cleared. But the hill was used very little and once again the sticker bushes came back.

So we're back in business!

Hellam Hill is in the site guide. Please refer to it for directions and protocol. Hellam is approx. 100 feet high and faces north. Not suitable for 1-3 day training due to creek at bottom of hill but H-1 suitable on a Falcon. May not be suitable for a modern day double surface HP wing. Very suitable for paragliders and Falcons....and lower performing double surface like Eagles and Pulses.

Take care when parking along road. Keep gate closed at all times. Do not climb over fence. Livestock in pasture. Do not litter.

Yay! I remember going to check out the pricker bushes one day after we got to Oregon Ridge and found it not to be good.
