can we get a flying forum
Here's the current division
Flight Topics:
All things flight-related for Hang Glider pilots: flying plans, site
info, weather, flight reports, etc. Newcomers welcome!
General Discussion:
For topics that don't fit into any of the other forums: politics,
rant-n-raves, cool web sites, anything and everything goes!
Ground-based-fun
For non-flying fun with pilots, friends, and family. Ski trips,
Ethiopean-nights, movies, biking, climbing... All that fun stuff you
can't do in the sky.
Perhaps we should narrow the flight topics section and move more to
general discussion? This forum is Mark's baby. Mark, what say you?

It's great that you are being so accommodating, Daniel, but there's
always going to be spillover. This is not a library, where loud and
persistent noise interferes with concentration. If you don't want to
read a post on the forum - don't read it. We don't need to enforce
quiet on a forum. The delete key is over there on the right side of

Daniel: I look at it like a public swimming pool. Chaos reigns over 90% of the area, but there's still a lap lane reserved for those who are there to accomplish a particular task.
I do want to be accomodating because I sense there's a decent demand for the lap lane.

I thought we started the new forum to accomodate those that just wanted to have a posting of flying related issues.
Hence,

I feel it has turned back into the previous list but in a much better format (because I don't have to delete I can just pick and choose which topics to read). Unfortunatly, we have so much "flying" related crap I believe we needed a "real" flight topic forum. I would also suggest that you have to have a mountain H3, clearance from Maine, and have posted less than 2 times a week for the past 2 months to be eligle for this forum.

The problem is that the forum is HG_forum, so we post anything related to
Hang Gliding. I think a flight-only forum for both HG and PG together would
be a fine idea. But a thread about flying which raises flight theory
questions is suddenly back to where we started. I don't mind the noise...it's
unavoidable.

Flying Forum
Hmmm. There is this thing called the Subject Line. This generally gives you an idea of the nature of the subject material in the message. Hence, the subject line of this message is Flying Forum. If you read a subject line that says Flying Saturday and it's posted on Thursday or Friday, there's a reasonable shot that the message relates to flying plans for Saturday. The same subject line posted on a Sunday or Monday would probably relate to a message on the actual flying that happened on Saturday. Thus, if you see a message with a subject line that says High Rock Food, this probably doesn't relate to actual flying. It probably relates to food. Thus, if you have no interest in the food being served at High Rock, then you simply don't open the message. It's not that hard.

LOL---I agree with Matthew 100%! Careful wording of subjects can help a lot in finding what you want. The other critical thing is to avoid "subject creep," where a "Flying Saturday" subject evolves into a discussion on bamboo harnesses (or whatever). If it wanders that much, either nip it in the bud and stay on subject, or just start a new topic called "Bamboo Harnesses."

I have a few comments about the suggestion that we create a more
targetted forum dedicated to flying plans/reports only...
First, I've moved the entire topic to General Discussion
(ot_forum@chgpa.org) because, although it relates to how we use
these forums, it doesn't actually relate to flying.
(yeah, yeah, splitting hairs... so shoot me! *smile*)
Second : Good topics/subject-lines can do a <b>lot</b> of good. For
instance, when creating a new thread/topic, I try to use something
like this if it involves flying plans:
<li>Flying Tue16Aug : Hooky at Woodstock?</li>
Tends to rise above the background noise, ya know? And posts about
how the day turned out naturally tend to go to the very same place.
How convenient!
Third : As others have said, the 'delete key' is there for a reason.
And in the context of the forum website, it's pretty easy to ignore
topics altogether if it clearly isn't of interest to you.
(If you obtain forum content <b>only</b> via email and are frustrated
by the signal-to-noise ratio.... I strongly suggest that you give the web
version a whirl!)
Fourth : Creating another forum/email-list doesn't really build any
"walls" . Your typical email-only user sees all messages in a single
in-box, and replies at will to any (or all) of them. A web-forum
user is simply going to post where and as s/he sees fit.
Fifth : For somewhat less typical users, additional forums/lists
can be a bit of a pain, because you now have to check multiple
places for potentially-interesting content.
Sixth : This <b>is</b> a club resource. If there is demand for
additional forums from the membership, I'll implement them, no
big deal!
If you want such a change, consider creating a poll at the forum
website to gather member feedback, and then present your
suggestions at a meeting.
And if additional forums really seems to be the way to go, perhaps
someone would also step forward to be a moderator, to make sure that
all posts are appropriate to the new forum's 'charter', and moving
those posts that are not?
