High Rock Launch Directors
Dear all;
I've had a limited number of responses so far to my request for
launch directors. I'd like to have 2 people in each slot, with some
combination of HR experience and face recognition - speeds up the process
of checking to make sure the pilot has signed the waiver if someone's
there who can recognize the local gang.
I've decided to start the launch cycle at 9 am instead of 8 (who
really launches at 8 am?), and have the following assignments so far.
I've tried to fulfill the requests as much as possible. Let
me know if you'd like to volunteer to double up or fill the one blank
space.
Saturday
9-11 am Linda Baskerville
11-1 pm Steve Krichten
1-3 pm Gary Devan ('retired' H4, much HR experience)
3-5 pm Dave Bodner
5-7 pm ---- WE NEED VOLUNTEERS
Sunday
9-11 am Linda Baskerville
11-1 pm Bob Buchanon
1-3 pm Joe Schad
3-5 pm Brian Vant-Hull
5-on: out-of-area pilots will probably be leaving.
I'd like to thank those who have volunteered so far (especially Linda for
volunteering for a double shift). But we really do need 2 on each slot,
so please help out. You do NOT have to be an experienced pilot since we
will team you up with experienced pilots....if we have two per slot.
Reminder of Duties:
* If pilot is not recognized, do the following:
- check list for waiver
- make sure experienced pilot is on wire crew and can brief on launch
technique
* ensure there is wire crew for launch and hang check is performed
* if a TFR is in effect, hold cell phone that has contact with the secret
service and ensure that initial phone call has been made informing them of
flight operations.
* perform spectator control, including parking control if the setup area
is threatened (we will have it roped off, but you never know).

High Rock Launch Directors
Hi guys,
My schedule at work is very fluid but right now I think I can say I have
a good handle on the High Rock weekend... So I can offer my meager services
on Sat and would request 11am-1 pm on Saturday and not sure what Sunday
looks like yet. If needed I could try to fly early (a 4 letter word that
"early" thing...) and take the 5-7 slot or maybe both? Sorry to keep you
waiting Brian.

I appreciate this and all other offers. I'll update the list sometime
today and keep an eye out for more offers. Those who haven't done a cliff
launch before remember you may not want to try it in thermally conditions,
so that would be a good time to be launch director (paired up with some
saint who could launch but has sacrificed a couple hours for the good of
the community (come'on, it's only 2 hours for an entire weekend!)).
Thanks to John and all others who have offered offline.

Here's what I have so far. I'm sorry hugh, you're not gonna like it, but
I really did need someone who flies the mountains alot and is not afraid
to speak his mind in the 1-3 hotspot. Matthew volunteered early on, but also
will arrive 1/2 hour late for his shift, so may have him drop in for the end
of the 1-3 shift.
I'd still like more volunteers...a brief 2-hour shift every 5 years isn't
asking a whole lot. We may even make up a special badge for you to wear so
all the cute wuffos know what an important person you are!

Hmmm, OK, but I was also supposed to be the one to mark off the set-
up area so people wouldn't park vehicles in it. (This was a duty I
took over from Daniel, who has a conflict.) Can Linda and Matthew
take over that duty along with the beginning time slot? Daniel said
he would buy the "danger" tape etc. - Hugh

Ah, so YOU'RE the one. Perhaps that will work, though Matthew won't make
it until 9:30. Shawn Rae might be able to help linda, though he can't
lift more than a few pounds and I don't know how he'll get there since
he's not allowed to drive either. Despite all this, the guy actually
volunteered to help! Way to go Shawn!
but this job is out in the open now, for anyone who wants to pitch in, if
it's flyable.

I can lay out the vehicle parking area tape - not a problem. I have
pink and yellow streamer tape currently in my possession (not yellow
danger or police line tape), just not any posts or sticks for the
perimeter at this point but I suspect I could get some.
I could use some advice about how much area to rope off.
For that matter, I am joining the clean up crew on Friday, will be
staying overnight at the LZ, and can plan to stake off the parking area
the night before if anyone thinks that would be adviseable.
But its gonna cost you some of those tantalizing grilled mushrooms Brian

High Rock Waiver Approved
We have a waiver to fly with the TFR around P-40 (High Rock) on Aug 20, 21, 27, and 28, in conjunction with the HR Fly-in. Those of you who have volunteered to act as launch site managers will need to keep a copy of this waiver on-hand. A single copy can be passed on from one group to the next at shift-change time. The Secret Service is expecting ONE contact (cell-phone) number that they can call if need be. That means we will need someone to volunteer their cell-phone for a day, to be passed along with the waiver at shift-change time, and it needs to be one that actually works reliably at HR launch (unlike mine). Do thses things and, the way I read this thing, we have permission to operater even if the TFR is active over the weekend.
Continue to coordinate all your activities with launch-meister Brian V-H. I will figure out a way to get you the waiver in time for first-shift Sat morning.

Does the waiver have a number? The SSOC seems to want a number, as I
recall. I told them "number 1" one time and that seemed to satisfy
them... - Hugh

High Rock Launch Directors
I think around 7 am. 8 am at the very latest. But if it's not gonna be
flyable, no reason to rope off the area, so just show up and make us happy
to see you! (but let's hope it's flyable!)

Re: High Rock Launch Directors
Brian now has the only copy of the waiver, and I do not recall if it was numbered or not. Past waivers never carried a number, even after I requested one to address this very issue. I think that Hugh's solution is very elegant.
