Years after I quite flying, I had a neighbor friend, Lloyd, 92 years old, who was in the last weeks of his stay with us. cancer.

Dave and I weren’t buds or anything and he barely remembered me, even so, on a cold call, he took a chance and provided me with an appetite enhancer that I could pass on to Lloyd. Lloyd always liked brownies, but he liked these especially.

Well that's very sad news.... In the pre-web days, Dave was the guy who set up the first email listserv for area pilots (you may rmember chga@folkriver.com). That list was the first means by which area pilots could discuss and plan for weekend flying. And I also recall spirited discussionsand flame-fests, as people became accustomed to the online world. Dave also took on the task of scanning the hard-copy versions of Skyline, the CHG(P)A newsletter that used to be published monthly. I hope his efforts in that direction won't be lost

In person, Dave was just an easy-going guy and he clearly enjoyed flying and rhe flying community. He was a bit off the radar in recent years, and I'm sad to learn why that was probably so.

Very sad to hear I hadnt seen Dave in many a year but still remember his sense of humor..and friendly manner.. a great guy..he will be missed...

Sad to hear. I recall, shortly after I joined CHGA, helping Dave move gear from his old electronics repair shop, just up Route 1 from Lasick's, to his new warehouse / workshop / back-up home. Quite an interesting day I spent with him. I think his love of flying was demonstrated by his goodbye flight at HIgh Rock, the day before leaving for his government-sponsored sabbatical.

I saw Dave last spring when I was back there. He had finally gotten rid of that crew cut and grown his hair out. A few years ago I was back there and went to visit him. He was on house arrest, part of his govt. sponsored sabbatical, and had a house arrest ankle bracelet. Now Dave, being an electronics whiz had figured out how it worked and on what frequency. He had built a high gain antenna and repeater system for it increasing his house arrest hot spot to a half mile circle. Yup, only Dr. Dave.

I, too, was there to help Dave move in College Park with Craig. Dave wouldn't fly forever.. and then he'd show up at High Rock out of the blue and spank everyone.

As Mark noted, he started the first Folkriver version of what was to become the list server. We HG pilots were online and and fighting about flying topics, posting tales of glory and figuring out the weather together for the weekend ahead.... well before there were blogs and Facebook and bulletin boards and the list servers we all use now. Dave was a pioneer and made us all pioneers with him. We owe him a debt of gratitude. He will not be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in Dave's honor may be directed to support cancer research at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center.

Perhaps a donation from CHGPA? I think that would be very appropriate, given Dave's support of the club via the early CHGA email listserv.

Had the pleasure a few years back to spend some time with "Dr.Dave" up at the house. He swung by to pickup a used glider I had. As you can imagine...the conversation was spirited...full of wit and wisdom. Very unique guy. And very good pilot during his heyday. Sorry to hear he had cancer. Didn't know. G'bye Dr. Dave. It was good knowing you.

Wow--RIP Dave. An interesting guy (in the vein of Cheech and Chong) and the inventor of the thermal rider--which to this day I think there are some devotees out west that still use em.
