Pulpit LZ's
I have a new H2 that is looking to fly the mountains soon and I would like to know from anyone who has been there recently what the LZ grass level/status is. Please.

Re: Pulpit LZ's
When I was there about a month ago the main LZ was chest high grass, and it looked like there was wheat in part of it. Bacil said there may have been a shorter area, but I didn't see it. I landed in the bailout, which was a bit of a squeeze to get in, but other than that the field conditions were fine.
Re: Pulpit LZ's
June 9 the primary was not a good option, with wheat and tall grass about chest high.
There is a dirt patch I managed to land in, but it's on a slope and tiny. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQv3T3oAoNA

Sorry, Larry, not meaning to be secretive.....I've been at training all week and have had very little access to a computer and I can only type so much on the Iphone with my fumble thumbs so I figured a short message and phone call would be a little easier for the time being
I was at the Pulpit about two weeks ago so this info is from then:
The secondary (bailout) was in good shape and very landable. The primary (diamond) was in bad shape and I would say not a good choice by any means. It had chest to neck high wheat throughout. The dirt area that Jesse referenced is not really that suitbable and although he executed a good landing it should not be considered a usable part of that LZ. It is very sloped and chunky.
There is however another option right across the street (7th street) from the primary. If you have the primary made (as long as you are not just squeaking into it) then you should have this field across the street made. It is a large mowed grass field that is oriented N to S and has a crest pretty much in the middle.... kind of like the secondary but much, much longer and larger. We HAVE NOT been given permission to land here as far as I know. One glider landed there when I was there two weeks ago without incident from any property owners.
Hope that helps,
Jon

If you have not walked that field, or landed in it, be aware that it slopes gradually away from 7th street. You can easily end up gliding all the way down as it drops off, wondering when you will stop. Go back and review your downhill landing advice in Pagen or Cheney (does anyone have Cheney, anymore?)There is however another option right across the street (7th street) from the primary.

Re: Pulpit LZ's
Jon, reported today the the primary has been mowed but there are large hay bails though most of the area but a few stips are open. Hopefully the bails will be moved in the near future!

The field that Craig is thinking of is just the 'tip of the iceberg', so to speak. The area near 7th does indeed slope away from the road, and at least some of it is usually planted.
But the entirety of the field is *way* larger than I originally knew. Go past the LZ and take the first right. A couple hundred yards in, a huge/obvious field will open up on your right. There's again a downhill section (towards the road you're now on). But if you hike in, there is a very large section that slopes up, towards the south. If the winds are W and not too strong, a cross-wind landing is very doable there. If NW, it might be possible to land to the N, but I'd have to take another look to be sure.
Last I checked, about a month ago, the field had not been planted with anything.
