Pulpit, Saturday June 2nd

Post by Ward Odenwald »

Forecasted winds aloft velocities have diminished since last night's guess and wind direction predictions now indicate that it will be straight in at the Pulpit. I'm headed there and should arrive around 10:30. Ward

I'm headed that way too. ETA is dependent on how much of a pain in the a%$ it is getting this 16 foot ladder situated on top of my car  Traded my truck in for a subaru and don't have my Tex rack built yet :(

Just posted to the Woodstock thread that I'm planning to head there. I'd really like to fly Pulpit, but nostepper shows winds aloft at Pulpit are 15-17 kts at 1700 feet and above. I've heard that Pulpit blows harder than forecast and Woodstock blows lower, so I'm thinking I'll head to Woodstock. I hope we ALL have great flights ... and I'll be looking forward to flying Pulpit when the forecast is the slightest bit lower.

Ladder wins :( Made it a few miles down the road but had to turn back...can't get the 16 foot ladder anchored without worry   . Hopefully Tex will have my rack done by the end of next week. Back at the house to take the failed glider/ladder off.

I agree completely.

Going to head to the Pulpit to this afternoon to help Ward and Bacil with a LATE day/ early evening flight.

After getting off of work at 12:30P headed to the Pulpit despite all the doomsday predictions. On the way up 270 from Rockville saw plenty of overcast in the distance and theorized that it should be throttled back a bit at the Pulpit launch. Sho nuff, when I arrived at 2P, conditions were FINE at 10 to 15 SFTI. Leisurely set up the new Sport2 waiting for Jon to arrive. Some wuffos arrived doing the geocaching thing? They found their "treasure" by the plaque on the Tuscarora Trail. Conditions actually got lighter as I set up and I was concerned about sledding. After Jon got to launch around 3:30P, the overcast was more prominent and it was pretty light on launch. Some sun broke thru as conditions picked up to 8 to 12 MPH. A student named Roger stopped by and he and Jon helped me launch from the pad around 5P. Got 1K' over in some light thermals out in the valley. The new harness hangs a bit too low so I cut the flight short due to the discomfort factor. I decided to go for the golf course driving range for plenty of room for landing the new bird. On the way out flew fast and experienced the PIO thing at altitude. Slowed her down and the glider did 2 or 3 more Dutch rolls before tracking straight. Used up 2/3 of the driving range and had a nice landing. Jon came down and picked me up. Andy, a Hyner Club pilot who just moved to the DC area a few months ago, showed up from Elizabethville (LZ in crops no fly) and had a nice extendo buoyant flight at the end of the day launching from the new ramp with Jon, I, and Charlie Fager's (arrived from training at Kirshner's Knob) assistance. He had a good landing in the secondary in a Moyes 147 Xtralite. After retrieval the 4 of us had some chow and beer at the bar talking flying till after 10P. I have to thank Jon big time for coming out to the Pulpit w/o his stuff to just personally help me back into the mountain air after a 7 month hiatus. Thanks a bunch buddy! Bacil

Awesome! Congrats on getting back in the air, Bacil. And we all thought it'd be blown out up there... nice.
