Daniels Friday 4/20
It looks like rain this weekend. A few PGs are planning to fly Daniels on Friday if the southerly forecast holds.

Count me in. What time ETA?
Leaving from DC, I can take 1 or 2 pilots with gear.

ETA 1pm. I'm interested in carpooling. Typical meeting point is the Shell gas station exit 47B off I66.

OK...new kid from driving from Staunton, VA...is IN !!
What time should I be in the LZ?...Matt?..is that ETA for Daniels or the rendezvous at the Shell Station?
I think I should be at Daniels by 1pm..but I'm new around here....Local advice welcomed.

Re: Daniels Friday 4/20
Matt, should I meet you at noon at the shell station?
Re: Daniels Friday 4/20
Ok..so I did have the right notion...1pm..Daniels LZ
I have flown Daniels before...and I think you were there.
To answer your Q's.... I'm a P3...never tried for the P4 rating...I'm sure I qualify..7 1/2 yrs paragliding...mostly mountain flying in Southern California...some small XC's. Also a a H4...a green H4 without any aerotow experience.....so I basically suck at both PG and HG
But most important.... I have 4WD and Beer !

Re: Daniels Friday 4/20
Am letting other folks recount the PG epic flights at Daniels. My two were 1) an early sled run, before it got good, and 2) a too- exciting flight that ended unfortunately due to grievous pilot error(s). So now I am still in a bit of pain, and will be doing some MRI and/or scans to see what damages. This is just to recount my perspective on the dumb and dumber of it:
Second flight, things had picked up and several soared. My take-off was good but hasty, and though I thought I had checked for free brake lines, soon as I was out of the slot, found my left brake line not just wrapped around itself but even wedged tightly into the pulley. Tried, but no way I could extricate in-flight. Problem was I shot up right after take-off and kept going up, up, up as I followed ridge to the left/east, trying to work out to valley. A long way down the ridge (past where it shallows out), I was still 250 or 300 over, hoping to start losing alttude, but even way out over valley, it was still super-buoyant. Felt totally calm, but noted that even though I used the left D-lines and right brake, clearly not a lot of good control. But with 10 minutes of flying away from LZ and now far from ridge, I was also far enough away from the main LZ, I figured, to lose the altitude enroute and thus avoid alot of maneuvers over the LZ. Good estimate, and even though I was losing/ gaining/losing, I could to some extent use lazy S-turns to position me above LZ and ready for a right turn 360, just that I was still pretty high. First 360 good, but still a bit high to get down before the wires/road/treeline, so went for a second. This 360 good maybe 3/4 of the way, but I turned too tightly and I think I was too deep into the brake. At what seemed maybe 15--20 ft off the deck, I took what was probably at least 50% collapse and WHAM on the ground, in major pain. Of course I had earlier slid out of seat and into full dangle, so my legs took some of it. But back and neck definitely traumatized or worse. Luckily, with the radio I could advise I would need some help.
I could "walk out of this one", but definitely not pack the glider, or drive, and got walking assists. Still to see what effects on bone and muscle. Thanks indeed to all the help from Krysta and Derrick, Randy I think, Jim McClave, Guy, Matt Ingraham--- and who did I forget? My wife was at the 47B Shell, as was my car, and she got me home. More later.

Re: Daniels Friday 4/20
John,
Sorry to hear about the mishap! Be sure to get your neck and back checked out as soon as possible. I hope it's nothing serious and you have a speedy recovery. Sounds like a terrifying situation to be in.
One time I allowed myself to be "hasty" on launch and I didn't attach my nose-cone on my HG during preflight. Luckily, it's not a critical part of my Falcon, but the fact that I missed anything scared me good. Never again. This sport doesn't always give us second chances.
A few weeks ago at Woodstock, PGs were doing multiple flights in one day and at one point, a PG pilot had some issues with brake lines wrapped on launch. Be careful yall!
