New High Rock Protocol

Post by stevek »

You no longer have to stop off at EJs, sign the log and pay. The log book is now in a plastic container on the picnic table. You do not pay EJ. The club or somebody or an organization yet to be formed will tell you how much you owe on a semi annual or annual basis. The cost will be based on usage. EJ will get a check. The concept is to pay her property taxes or as much of them as we can.

You can still stop in and say hi.

Bring new pilots in to meet her as usual.

Uhh--and does the per use rate remain the same? In other words, any idea of any change in fees?

High Rock arithmetic

Post by Spark »

By coincidence, I have the logbooks for about 12 years. I will provide some simple stats - #s of flights per year. Perhaps this will assist us in understanding the potential site usage.

Counting fly in money and a pass the hat fund raiser (as well as daily use fees) I think we made the taxes last year. I don't think there will be a major change. [/b]

Just an FYI, the change in the landing fee system was at the request of
EJ. We're still working out the details. Spark, those stats will be
very helpful. As always, you're a big help!

Yesterday was fun. Thought it would be easier, the sky looked great.
But btwn 2:00 & 5:30 with five pilots making 6 flights, we only found
one thermal that we could really climb out in. Big thanks to Shawn for
staying to help everyone launch!

This is the most loopingest loop I've seen in a paraglider:

Thank you for mentioning that this is not just another great idea from Stevek. EJ brought this up over a year ago. Avoided the issue at the time. I thought that she wouldn't care how we got her the tax money as long as we got it to her. But it turns out that how we do it is important too. I think the problem is that if we give it to her in dribs and drabs she spends it and ends up hurting at tax time.

So we need to come up with some kind of accounting system if we continue
on a per day payment basis. Hmmm...lots of discussion ahead. Perhaps we
just individually count up our flights (in our own or her logbook) at some
specified time each year and then pay up?

Preliminary High Rock Site Usage Stats

Post by Spark »

We are still tallying, but this preliminary list provides a pretty good picture. I won't bother to summarize, or speculate.

Year - # Flights
1978 - 776
1979 - 867
1980 - 935
1981 - 928
1982 - 937
1983 - 629
1984 - 664
1985 - 590
1986 - 432

1987 - 2000 (tbd)

2001 - 312
2002 - 130
2003 - 179
2004 - 176

It will be interesting to see the missing numbers. I'll post them when my son is finished tallying.

Flying on Thursday 8/4

Post by drice21037 »

The weather looks good for Ridgely tomorrow. Dr. Jack thinks there will be
500 - 600 fpm.

I'm planning to head there in the late morning. Company/thermal markers would
be great!

Dave

Way to use that child labor 'Spark. Wow---for whatever reason, usage has dropped WAY off since the early 80s. Fewer pilots flying? Fewer rabid pilots? More sites to spread the flights around? Hmm....

High Rock is unavailable to fly as often since 9/11 due to TFR restriction which accounts for a big impact of the number of flights from the Rock

High Rock Drop-Off

Post by Matthew »

Four things...

1. 9/11 and TFRs

2. Less pilots, less active pilots, less rabid pilots.

3. Tow parks. High Rock was the place to go when the forecast was L&V, not just NW, back before tow parks. Now pilots go to the tow parks with an L&V forecast and with forecasts of West and NW.

4. Everyone has to go XC these days. Flying just isn't enough. High Rock isn't thought of as a good XC site. But you may want to ask Steve K. and Kevin C. and Richard Hays and a few others about that. But most really aren't up to that kind of challenge or flying just for the fun of it!

Not necessarily in that order.

More on HR

Post by stevek »

I don't necessarily think that we need to pay/guarantee EJs entire tax bill of $2400. I do think it is important that we guarantee her a minimum say 1600 or 1800. If we raise more she gets it.

Last year, flying fees probably came to about 1500. The official fee was only five but just about everybody was throwing in more. There was also a pass the hat campaign which raised about 800. I had thought that she also netted something from the fly in but I now understand that this is incorrect. Anyway, we came close but that may not be sustainable.

One other point: Dan is looking into the possibility of getting the taxes reduced on the grounds that the land is all assessed residential while most of it should be agricultural.

New High Rock Protocol

Post by mcelrah »

Only if pilots are unwilling to go through the procedures worked out
for exercising the waiver. I don't remember very many ("any") times
we have said "this would be a perfect day at the Rock - but the TFR
is in effect, so we can't fly there"... - Hugh
