I'm curious as to the discrepancy between the NOAA and Wunderground forecasts. NOAA says NW winds and Wunderground says NE.

Anyway, I'm considering it.

I am somewhat interested. I also wonder why the weatherunderground seems screwey on the forecast.

Could I ask one of you stop by the USFS office in Edinburg to pick up a copy of our Woodstock site permit if you have some free time today? I called the USFS office this morning and asked them to pull a copy for us. The nice woman who answered the phone said she'd look for it but wasn't certain she could find it. It might be wise to call ahead. Their phone number is (540) 984-4101.

I am hopeful that the site agreement will be general enough that we can make safety related improvements without having to ask for additional permission.

The office is located at 95 Railroad Ave. Edinburg. It only takes about 15 minutes to get there from the intersection of Hwy 11 and Woodstock Tower Road.

I'm in for Woodstock. While Wunderground still says NE, multiple other sites indicate NW.

John M, do you want to carpool? Otherwise, ETA about 1pm.

Cameron from the USFS called me back. He said he doesn't think there is a Special Use Permit for the site. He thinks it is simply recorded on the USFS books as an authorized non-commercial recreational activity. He said he'd continue to look into it though.

I captured this satellite screenshot at 3:30 today. Does the cloud formation mean there is wave lift, at least over the Allegheny?

Screwy forecast. Got to launch to find light conditions. At least the wind was NW. Never got much above 5-8mph steady, but thermals pushed it to 10-15. We waited till 3 or so for the sun to heat things up and it payed off with nice thermaling flights for all of us-- John M., Jon B., Gary S., and me. Landed after 45 minutes. Falcon is tiring on the arms.

Here's to warm weather. Thanks to Amy for helping out!

Fun day at Woodstock! I couldn't believe it when I got to launch and it was QUIET....there was barely any breeze coming in!! The entire drive out, trees were wagging, flags were standing straight and the car was getting moved around a bit with some gusts. There were cummies everywhere to the east and north of Woodstock.....but only blue sky at Woodstock. The Woodstock Effect was in effect. Thank goodness for some sunshine and thermal development around 3......it remained blue but there was lots of bird activity and the thermals were plentiful and healthy.
Everybody had very strong launches and great flights. I was the last to launch and picked the best cycle I could, which turned out to be short lived and after a minute or two I found myself about 200' below launch saying to myself, "uuuuuhhhhh ooohhhhh  ". Thankfully I hooked a nice thermal out over the shoulder several hundred yards out in front of launch that took me up and out of sledding danger. After that it was all fun with lots of thermaling and trying to find cores. I maxed out at 2000' over and the view was incredible with the clear skies.

Big thanks to Amy for helping with launching and driving! GaryS, JohnM and Jesse nice flying with you guys!

I was first to launch at 3:20 and immediately had good lift getting above easily. Went south to Edinburg gap and got 3k above. Lost some coming back but found another near launch again getting over 3k above. Flew out in the valley not losing much and flew past Rt 81 which was a kick and on the way back would circle in sink. Very enjoyable flight of 1:45 min.

Sounds sweet! So was the cloud formation i posted wave, or just induced cloud formation by ridges?

Well, wave clouds are typically induced by ridges so I guess it's a "yes" to both of your questions :-)

Banner day for Mike Higgens flying a Discus 2 out of Fairfield. Flew an OLC 1,000K with 2/3 of it in the wave. Trace and info here:

Woah! 10 hour flight! Takeoff at noon, landing at 8pm. 1000k = 620 miles! 4000m max height = 13,000 feet! Damn!

Matt

That would be UTC so more like a start at 8:00 am local.

Baude Litt took a more southerly route onto the Massanutten expecting the ridge to be working. Unfortunatly the ridge was too weak and northerly and he landed out by New Market; made for a looooooong retrieve.
