Here's the number of the approach tower at Patuxent again: 301-342-3836. Usually, during the week,?R-4006 IS hot, from 8 AM until 5 PM. Usually, on the weekend, it is NOT HOT, and you may overfly it without restriction. Obviously call first to check, even on weekends. Also avoid directly over flying both Bennett and Laurel airports (marked by small, magenta circles on your sectional) so you don't get smacked by a sky diver plummeting out of the sky.
I need to call Wallops, too. It takes up about half the peninsula further to south.

Umm...this may be a bit off this topic, but related: does anyone have suggestions for how to enter GPS coords for irregularly-shaped airspace restrictions? I know all about proximity waypoints, but that's a circle. What about strange-shaped MOAs?

Juust curious what you experienced XC folks do, if anything. (Seems like saving waypoints for the corners might be one thing to do, for example.)

Flying in Maine

Post by brianvh »

I've been up at a conference in Colby college, Maine, for the last week.
The one aerotow operation in Maine is only a 10 minute drive away! a
small, but awfully nice community of pilots, towing by trike. Given
the contours and the nearby trees and houses they generally don't tow if
the wind is above 10 mph, but last weekend it calmed down enough that I
could get in the air around 4:30. There was reportedly some scattered
lift up there, and I was advised that if we went through some good lift
I should pin off. But my vario always chooses the most inopportune times
to conk out. I could feel what felt like lift, but couldn't confirm.
Spent the whole tow giving wacks to the vario, but it didn't come back on
until the end of the tow. Found a little light lift to extend for a few
minutes over some of the most beautiful landscape I've towed over: the
horizon was lined with peaks, and lakes dotted the flats. I'm going
back tomorrow!

Marc Fink was teaching a lesson, doing alternating scooter tows with hang
glider and paraglider. They were getting nice flights. It's truly a joy
to see the Finkubator step into the role of incubating new pilots up here.
A beautiful state deserves a beautiful sport.

Lots i could say about the conference, but it's not political enough for
the off-topic forum.

Have fun Brian, I can't make it out 'cause I'm working art shows the next three weekends in a row. The weather should be totally awesome!!

Thanks - sorry for coming in late before I had read all the chatter -
was out of town for long weekend and had a wicked e-mail queue. - Hugh
