Chilly but FUN day at High Rock. All who flew soared!! I was up for 45 minutes (enough to get my face chilly) and got around 1000' over. There was some nice thermal activity to be had despite the mostly overcast skies (the sun did kinda show up a little bit for a short time...kinda). Great to see such a good turnout of hang gliders again.
Big thanks to Gary Devan for coming out on this cold day and helping with wire crew. thanks man!! also thank you for the helping to get my key fob out of my bumper after it got wedged in there (don't ask...just know Gary worked some magic and got it out lickity split!) Thanks!

Great day! Everyone flew to their cold threshold. -- Me, Karen, Jon, Kelvin, Carlos, Greg Sessa, Ashley, Danny Brotto. I got and hour and 9 minutes and 2700 over. Huge lift going all the way out to the valley and having to skirt flurries coming in from the North-- I did get a little Snirga on the wing.
AND AWESOME, HUGE THANKS TO GARY DEVAN FOR HELPING OUT AT LAUNCH!!!!!!
Let's do it again on X-mas Eve!!!!

Woodstock was good for everyone who showed. total of eight paragliders and one Hang Glider. I believe everyone got at least an hour some maybe two. I never got to the top of the stack but managed 1400 over launch. Lots of lift out front. Probably good Sunday as well.

At least 3 of us PG pilots had to pull on "big ears" in order to avoid getting too high, i.e. potentially into the cloud deck. Big ears is the name for pulling the outside tips of the wing down thus decreasing the effective size of the wing and increasing the sink rate. The lift was strong and widespread.

Re: Saturday 12/17 - NW
I was a little spooked by the clouds and the snow and the fact that I was screaming up with the bar held in so I stuffed it and landed but it took a good 20 minutes or so do get down. I had a less than stellar launch. The winds ramped up when I got on the block. I was the last pilot to launch. Several launches that day had gotten turned to the left and I was no exception. I think that I was too far back on the block. I was launching where other pilots did but since the wind had picked up I should have been further out. I believe that when I began my launch and took a step forward the wind popped my nose and I didn't get it down agressively and quickly enough. Fortunately I was able to dive out with no mishap, but this is my 2nd bad launch out of 3 at the Rock. (one bad, one good, one bad). Matthew and I haven't done much foot launching this year so we purposely went to Taylors last month and I had nice launches on the hill. I also haven't been flying High Rock regularly like I used to do. Thanks to my wire crew and any feedback would be appreciated.

I'll reiterate that it was a fun flying day until the cold made the LZ look inviting. The flying was braindead, except you had to bail out of thermals as the misty virga and cold as you approached cload base was not where the fun-factor was.
Looked in my log book and I had last flown HR in 2006 - Where does time go?
Thanks to the wire crew - Gary, Matt, Karen (let me know if I missed anyone), and Jon for the ride back to launch.
