Smithsburg

Post by Richard Hays »

Went out there ( like a dumbass ) on Thanksgiving day with 2 students. Took a chance that there would be some NW or WNW going on early. Nope. Nadda. Pure west and SW. So it goes. Nice day for a drive though.

BUT....the grass really could be an issue out there. It was laying down due to the previous rains but it was thick and somewhat difficult to walk around in...even in that state. I'd recommend some weed wacking or moving for a "runway". What a shame too...because the LZ is perfectly clear.

Top has been plowed and I'm assuming planted with winter wheat cover.

Hey Richard

Don't know about the grass situation but the winds should be darn good for Smithsburg this Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

I talked with Eddie on Sunday and asked if he could ask the tenant/landowner if we could mow it. He said he would try and might know by Friday. He says it's hard to catch up with the tenant/landowner because he handles 3 farms. Anyone else that can encourage Eddie might be helpful. Eddie did ask whether the club had been giving the tenant/landowner xmas gifts which I thought we had been doing. I will gladly mow it with my riding mower if we get permission.

Yes, we've been sending fruit for Smithsburg for several years. I just ordered this year's gift, which should arrive before Christmas. This might be a good opportunity to find out if they're actually getting it. If not, could Eddie get us a better address?

BTW, we're sending the fruit to Kirk Winders, who I assume is the owner.

Jon let me know if I can help you mow/whatever to get Smithsburg ready for flying. Looking forward to another fun winter out there!

I taught a small class there on Thursday with the winds being quite nice until 2:00 then got lighter and more cross from the left. The grass in the setup area and hill area is mostly laying over and didn't cause too much problems. I spoke with Eddie this morning and he was able to talk to the land owner/tenant (Kirk Winders} and get permission for us to cut the grass. I will be going there on Saturday and try mowing it with my riding mower.

Important: The land owner requested that we not fly there when the LZ is muddy because of damage to the alfalfa crop in the LZ.
